If you want a car that just works, you buy Japanese.

I totally agree I've a Toyota for that very reason, after the last two of my German cars were a hassle, with dealers that really couldn't care less. I swore never to buy anything other than Japanese and it's been a good move.

I did not mention the interior plastics, which are an irrelevance. And FWIW, BMW interiors are just as apt to not going back together properly if ripped open to put radios etc in as any other -- so the plastics can't be that fantastic.

Indeed my experience is that BMW interiors are mostly clip-fit, just like Ford/GM. In this regard they are still light-years behind the Japanese who may use cheap plastics, but actually screw and bolt most of it down.

As I say though, plastics are irrelevant. Mechanical reliability is king with older cars. BMWs may be over-engineered but when they go wrong they tend to lunch huge parts of the running gear, requiring major repairs which run to many hundreds of pounds.

If you want a car that just works, you buy Japanese.

I think your use of the word 'blasphemy' is quite apt, in the context of your religious devotion to BMWs.

Is that the reason why BMW's feel rock solid with no rattles or squeaks even past 100k miles? Ever sat in a high mileage BMW E39 5 series? The build quality in that was phenomenal ,so much that even with 200k mikes they still feel solid with no interior rattles/squeaks.

Sit in any Japanese tin box that's only 4-5 years old with less than 60k miles and it already rattles and squeaks

Um... I think the OP gave us his choice and thanks back on page 2. The rest of this thread looks like pointless petrolhead point-scoring of no relevance to anyone. Give it a rest, please.

I find it absurd that people here truly believe a Toyota has better build quality and interior than a BMW!

Build quality, generally yes. Japanese engineers engineer. German engineers just throw material at the problem.

Load of woo about plastics on the dashboard -- meh.

Yes, but it can be quite enjoyable to repudiate the claims of the BMW evangelist. :D

Where did I say anything about interior plastics?

On reliability and quality of dealers Toyota is far better than BMW. If I wanted a better interior than BMW I'd look at Lexus.
