If you cannot contact HMRC on their 0300 number I suggest you write to them, their address is online.
Just to clarify - you may be asked to give just the last four digits of a bank account that you either get benefits paid into or get interest on. This is to enable HMRC to confirm your identity against their records.
You will not be asked to provide full bank account details.
There may well be some scam mails and links circulating. THe offical online form for applying can be found on the gov.uk website

The allowance works out at about £17.67 pm tax reduction applied since your first pay-day after 6 April 2015. If the tax reduction is greater that the tax due in the first month of payment then you will get a tax rebate in that month's pay.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

I was surprised to see how few had registered when Marriage Allowance was discussed in the Press recently. After some initial problems with the application website (typical of all Government IT projects. When will they test systems properly before release?) my wife and I applied months ago and the tax switch was confirmed within days, HMRC sent revised tax code to my pension providers and the change was reflected in next monthly pension payment.
Don't hesitate to apply as it's worth up to £212. Why should HMRC keep any more of your money than they have to! Don't worry too much about giving personal details as the powers that be know everything about you anyway.0 -
I rang them up, my wife gave them her details, then I did the same and bingo 7 mins. later completed. I will get my new taxcode in the post.
The lady was extremely helpful.:j0 -
Does anyone know if the arrangement can be cancelled part way through a tax year? Would they pro rata it or back date to April? Trying to decide when to reinstate deferred pension.I am not a cat (But my friend is)0

Sorry if this question has already been asked but..
If my wife has a salary sacrifice for Child Care Vouchers and this takes her income under the £10,600 threshold can we apply for the MA? or do we need to include the amount of the sacrifice when applying.
If so this will take her over the threshold.

Have I understood you correctly?
Edit
As far as I can tell, Salary Sacrifice for Childcare Vouchers does not count as income for tax and NI purposes.

Hi. My wife and I have qualified for the transfer of tax allowance, however, there seems to be a catch. I received a letter last October telling me that I must register for tax self-assessment and complete a self assessment before the transfer can be set up.
My wife has her OAP, which is well below 10k/year. My OAP and works pension give me about 20k/year and that's it for the pair of us apart from about £150/year each in share dividends that are taxed at source.
I've browsed the HMRC website until my eyeballs ached, but can't find self-assessment as a condition to receiving this allowance. So I've tried telephoning the number on the letter to ask why I had to self-assess, which would be an annual harrassment for a pensioner. After listening to, and battling through the automated - er, stuff - and discovering which answers moved things along, the conclusion has always been the "We're too busy" message followed by being cut off. I'm sick, sick, sick of the same darned thing every time I phone but still want an answer before committing to self-assessment for the rest of what's left of my life.
I'm so ticked off, a letter was sent to my MP by way of complaint, but have yet to hear from him.
Can anyone offer comment as to why I might have been singled out for this unnecessary rigmarole?
Thanks in advance for answers.
Dave
My MP has replied and, predictably, has forwarded my query to HMRC for a response. He did write a strong covering letter saying he'd had many such complaints referred to him, so it will be interesting to see the reply. I would add that as Paul Farrelly was a journalist prior to becoming an MP, he writes a mean letter!

Hi
Does anyone know if you can apply for the Marriage Allowance if you have ISA's and if so, do you have to take into account the interest you get from them when calculating if you earn more than £10,600 a year? I know one of the criteria for applying says that ..... "One of you needs to be earning £10,600 or less (not including any of your £5,000 tax-free savings interest)", but does this £5,000 include ISA interest?
Thanks in advance for any advice.0
