I've just helped my parents to claim this allowance - I can't believe how easy the form was, and how quick! The email acceptance came in minutes. I'm so glad I watched the Martin Lewis Show on Friday!

    Hi,
My wife is employed and also self employed. She earns about £10,000 a year in total. If we still apply, will it work with self-assessment?

Basically, she earns £8,000 from employment. She doesn't pay any tax via PAYE as this is below her personal allowance.
She also earns about £2,000 (profit) from self employment.
Currently her total income is less that £10,600 so doesn't pay any tax.
If she moves £1060 allowance to me, she'll still won't have any tax deducted via PAYE, but will need to pay tax on some of the self-employment income.
Will the HMRC online Self Assessment system know her new tax code and take the necessary tax from her self employment income?
The new tax return will ask the question regarding whether she has received an allowance from you or whether she has transferred 10% of her allowance to you.

So long as she completes this part of the form correctly then the system will automatically calculate the tax due.

It's the same with anything when it comes to self assessment, the self assessment form, both online and paper versions, know nothing about your circumstances or what information is held on your PAYE record, therefore you have to ensure that when completing section 3 of the online tax return process (Tailoring your return) you answer the questions correctly so that the system brings up the necessary parts of the form to complete during section 4 of the process (Fill in your return).

With regards to the identity verification process in the online application, I'm assuming the goal is to verify what my mother's income is, in which case it she should provide the last 4 digits of the account her CA is paid into. Is this correct?

I believe it's verifying her identity rather than her income, but the one her CA is paid into is probably the best bet as you can be (almost certainly) sure that HMRC/DWP will be aware of that one.

It's not too clear what the <Daily mail article> is saying.

It is probable that this only means that future claimants, in the next four years, might be allowed to back-date a claim to this year when MA was launched.

Any increase in the allowance in the next budget would, of course, always be handy.

I think someone is confused, probably not reading and understanding what she has written, typical journalist !
But ministers have now been forced to offer couples the chance to claim backdated payments for four years in order to encourage more people to claim.
The new tax break, which came in on April 6 last year,

    From the article :-
Tory MP David Burrowes, who campaigned for ministers to introduce it, said last night that the allowance should be ‘more generous and more targeted at couples with young children’.

He added: ‘We need to make sure that our commitment to recognise marriage in the tax system is more than window dressing. I will be pressing the Treasury to increase uptake’.
Turkeys and Christmas come to mind. :)

Did your refund include any back dating ?
  • Al you need online is your spouses NHI number, do not give any bank data as it is not required. There is a circulating online page that even shows two wedding bands/rings at the close and states that you need your passport and other very personal data, do Not respond to that online page.
If you cannot contact HMRC on their 0300 number I suggest you write to them, their address is online.
