    Hi
Does anyone know if you can apply for the Marriage Allowance if you have ISA's and if so, do you have to take into account the interest you get from them when calculating if you earn more than £10,600 a year? I know one of the criteria for applying says that ..... "One of you needs to be earning £10,600 or less (not including any of your £5,000 tax-free savings interest)", but does this £5,000 include ISA interest?
You can apply for Marriage Allowance whether you have ISAs or not. Cash ISA interest is not taxable income so will not affect your tax liability.

  • Many thanks for your response.
  • Is it me that finds the online claim system hard?

On the start page there are two choices it says will be possible to use
    • the last 4 digits of the account that your child benefit, tax credits or pension is paid into
    • the last 4 digits of an account that pays you interest

My wife has an annual income less than the £10,600
I have an annual income between £10,601 and £42,385
    NI input plus required DOB

    The I get this
Your tax credits bank account> Enter the last 4 digits of the account where your tax credits are paid.
However...when I reach that point there is only one questionYour tax credits bank account> Enter the last 4 digits of the account where your tax credits are paid.

It rejects the bank account number most likely because we don't receive tax credits but we do get interest off that bank as its a Santander 123?

I have an empty cash ISA from the transfer....but that's not linked to the wife.

    What's going wrong?

Do you think or expect to get this years altered and therefore a refund?

That's exactly what one should expect. The allowance will be effectively backdated to the beginning of the current tax year providing the application is made before 6 April 2016.

Thanks for that....any idea from my other post above why the only option to verify online is Tax credit or is the HMRC website known for ....problems?

    Others report no problems recently.

It might be a browser or add-on setting (e.g. Firefox's NoScript). I can only suggest you check your browser settings and try again.

I have found telephone or pen and paper easier than most of the current .gov offerings :o

I thought that but no script isn't blocking anything and there was only question 1 of 1 for identity
the last 4 digits of the account that your child benefit, tax credits or pension is paid int

Putting the bank account number last 4 digits generated this
The last 4 digits you have provided don’t match our records

Given that tax credits don't apply I was expecting to see the option the last 4 digits of an account that pays you interest but it wasn't there!

    Oh well...phone call it is
