    Woo hoo.....:j

New tax code arrived last week.
An extra £200ish in pay packet this month. Happy days.

Thanks to MSE for reminding me to apply for Marriage Allowance.
  • Are you able to just claim for this year? I've been on maternity leave and won't have earns over my tax threshold this tax year but I will earn over the threshold for next tax year .

If you claim the allowance this year but don't want it next year then either of you can contact HMRC to cancel the transfer - you may need to wait until after 6 April to cancel for next year.

Not without the other finding out, as both partners will get revised tax codes from HMRC

My understand is that the adjustment for the Marriage Allowance will simply get added to or subtracted from your current personal allowance, whatever it hapepns to be.

Only the spouse who is giving up (losing) the allowance can apply for it. The recipient cannot claim the allowance but can ask HMRC to cancel it.

  • a) My income for 2015/16, excluding bank interest, is £10149 against a personal allowance of 10500.

    b) If I transfer 10% of my personal allowance (1060) to my husband then my revised personal allowance will be 9540.

    c) What effect does the reduced personal allowance have on bank accounts where I have previously registered for interest to be paid gross?

I ask because, after the transfer I will be paying tax on part of my income and I understand that to have interest paid gross I need to be a non taxpayer.

    From: This is Money :-
"From April 2015, if total income - wages, pension, benefits and savings income - is less than the personal allowance, plus £5,000, savers will eligible to register for tax-free savings with their bank or building society. The basic tax-free personal allowance will be £10,500 in 2015/16."

See <This is Money article> for more info.

In fact, this year's allowance is £10,600 (Autumn Statement)
