I've just filled in the online form to transfer my tax allowance to my husband, and I've already had the e-mail to say I was successful.

Thanks for the information. I'm now spreading the word!

  • So - having a quick browse through the compers pages and noticed married tax allowance warning in the right hand side!

I just assumed that it was automatically done for us - hubby is in the Forces, I work part time from home.

I've just done it all online (after scrabbling about looking for his wage slips) and it's already been authorised and transferred from me to him!

I've just told him that he got the better V day pressie and that every year now he will start it in debt to me :rotfl::rotfl:

But on a serious note! Cheers MSE :j:beer::beer: Another fantastic saving for my family and all thanks to your hard work.
Back to comping after a couple of years overseas
    Good Luck Everyone
  • Hello, does anyone know if my husband who doesn't work (and not on any benefits) can transfer the £1060 to me?
I work and am a basic rate taxpayer.

I have been looking around and cannot find the answer.

    Many thanks!

Yes, if you meet the criteria below then your husband can transfer the allowances to you.
Who can get it? This is the most important factor as only people with these specific circumstances will be able to apply:
    • You're married or in a civil partnership.
    • One of you needs to be earning £10,600 or less (not including any of your £5,000 tax-free savings interest).
    • The other one of you needs to be a basic-rate taxpayer (couples with a higher- or additional-rate taxpayer aren't eligible for this allowance).
    • Both of you must have been born after 6 April 1935.

It'll depend on your husband's particular circumstances and how quickly his tax code is adjusted. If he's in a PAYE job and his employer has his adjusted tax code now, then rather than a rebate he may simply find he ends up paying less tax in his pay packets between now and 5th April....

    Thanks for that.

Only two more pay days this year so I'll keep an eye on his tax code and grab back any savings as and when. I'm going to put it in the holiday spending fund this year :D

  • My mother stopped working 4 years ago and currently her only source of income is the £3230 pa she receives in Carers' Allowance. My father is a basic rate tax payer so it makes sense for my mother to transfer her £1,060 personal allowance to him.

With regards to the identity verification process in the online application, I'm assuming the goal is to verify what my mother's income is, in which case it she should provide the last 4 digits of the account her CA is paid into. Is this correct?

The goal is to verify that you are who you say you are and that you and your husband are legally married so that you are entitled to transfer the Marriage Allowance to him.

    Hi,
My wife is employed and also self employed. She earns about £10,000 a year in total. If we still apply, will it work with self-assessment?

Basically, she earns £8,000 from employment. She doesn't pay any tax via PAYE as this is below her personal allowance.
She also earns about £2,000 (profit) from self employment.
Currently her total income is less that £10,600 so doesn't pay any tax.
If she moves £1060 allowance to me, she'll still won't have any tax deducted via PAYE, but will need to pay tax on some of the self-employment income.
Will the HMRC online Self Assessment system know her new tax code and take the necessary tax from her self employment income?
