  • I too am in receipt of disability & mobility allowance,my wife works 36hrs a week, would we be able to switch (think its 10%) of her allowance to me,she earns around 12.600 annually,we both have national Ins No`s
  • I am a basic rate taxpayer but ONLY by virtue of "Gift Aid" donations extending my basic rate band. Do I qualify for married couples allowance?

On those figures there is no point in her switching any of her allowance to you, as she is already making use of it all - switching will simply result in her paying more tax and negate any saving you might make.

What is your taxable income ? If it's under £10,660 (£11,000) from next April then you are not using all of your personal allowance and therefore are not paying any income tax. It would therefore be worth you transferring some of your allowance to her, to reduce her income tax bill.
  • Just read Martin's article at:

Whilst I was on the phone to the tax office, I mentioned this allowance as my wife is self employed and never uses up her full allowance. They asked to speak to my wife and the M.A. has now been transferred to me saving us £212 a year.

    Thanks Martin :money:you are a star :j:T:D

As above, if you and your wife both have a NI number and you are both liable to basic-rate tax then the lower earner can apply to transfer 10% of their allowance to the higher earner.

If you don't pay any tax then there would be no point increasing your allowance anyway.

In this particular area, HMRC really are getting the job done.

The maximum savings from the Marriage Allowance is £212 for a full year so there were probably other refunds included.

Not sure if it's still a loophole but years back my father claimed my tax allowance! I was married, at home with a child, but my husband was a student with no income to claim against his tax allowance. My father successfully claimed my tax allowance against his income even although I was married, living in my own home and hundreds of miles away from him.
The bone of contention was that legally the tax relief was his, morally I felt that he should have given me some of it as we were really hard up. He never did.
I realise that a wife with a husband who has a 'below the tax threshold' is unusual- but it might be worth investigating for a parent - but only if you are prepared to share if you get lucky!!

In the UK? Are we talking pre 1990?
