This may be a dumb question but can I/my wife apply for this if she isn't in employment (she has an NI number)?

Yes, she can, as long as you are a basic rate taxpayer.

Thanks for that. My wife has just got her NI number but am wondering what she would use to identify herself as she doesn't have any of:
    • Account that child benefit, tax credits or pension is paid into
    • An interest-paying account that pays you interest
    • A P60

What other information do I need? To apply for the marriage allowance online, you will need to confirm your identity through the Government's 'Verify' service. For this you'll need a valid UK passport or UK photocard driving licence, along with information about your finances, such as a recent bank, credit card, loan or mortgage statement.

If you don't have these forms of ID or financial information to hand, you will be directed to HMRC's own online service to complete the application. Only if this fails will you be directed to go through the verification process by phone on 0300 200 3300. If you need to apply by phone, you won't be disadvantaged and, assuming you pass the eligibility criteria, will be able to get the marriage allowance.
  • Apologies if a similar question was answered elsewhere, but I've not been able to find an answer through my searches:

I've just started a new job at the start of this calendar year. While my full-year salary will put the marriage allowance outside of my wife and my reach, I'm wondering about this partial year from now until the end of the tax year. During that time I will have earned less than £10,600. Does that mean I am able to transfer my allowance this tax year to my wife and then quit using the Marriage Allowance after April?

Yes. you should be able to claim for this year, however HMRC will assume that the arrangement is ongoing so it would be up to you to inform HMRC to remove the allowance when you become a taxpayer.

  • Thanks for your help.
  • Hi, my husband and I are both higher rate tax payers, I'm under the assumption that we are ineligible for the marriage tax allowance :sad:but is there any alternative we can claim?
  • Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but is this auto-renewed for the 2016/2017 tax year? We applied for this tax year as my wife will be earning under £10,600, and there is a good chance the same will apply for the 2016/2017 tax year. I'm not sure if it just continues until we advise them her earnings are over the tax-free threshold for earnings, or if we need to re-apply each year.

Yes it does, I received my tax code for next year just the other day and it's all still on there.

Thank you for your quick reply. You've already received your tax code for the 2016/2017 tax year? I didn't realise you could find it out already. How would I find out what mine is? I'm just trying to work out what my earnings after deductions will be from April 2016 onwards. Thanks.
