I applied way back when it first was allowed, had to ring them as the website didn't work, and they processed it manually.
Today my husband has recieved a letter saying "the tax saving will be applied when you file your Self-Assessment return"
He is employed, PAYE, doesn't do self-assessment. What on earth are they playing at?
  • Hi, I have been recieving the Marriage allowance for some time now and today I have had a letter from HMRC.
It states that "my partner has applied to transfer some of her tax allowance to me".
It goes on, "The tax saving will be applied when you fill in your self assessment return"

I am really confused about this.
Should I ignore this letter or do I really have to fill in an SA form.
I was under the impression that once the transfer had taken place there was no further action required until there was a change of circumstances.
Can anyone give me some help with this please.

    Regards

    Pete
  • Received the MA from my wife but have now received from HMRC a letter saying 'my tax saving will be applied when you file your Self Assessment return'. I have never filed such a return, do I have to start to continue to receive the MA benefit?
  • Hi, hopefully I have some good news for you. I received the same letter today and rang the Tax phone number on the letter and was advised that this letter was sent in error. Apparently it should only have been sent to people who are current registered to complete a yearly self assessment. My letter has my UTR number on left just above my name from when I was working paying HRT and required to submit a Self Assessment yearly. It looks the computer (or person who programmed it) has sent this letter to everyone who has a UTR rather than just the ones who are currently required to complete a SA. Hope this reply puts your mind at rest.
  • I hope this is the case, and we will now get another letter explaining the mistake. How much money has this 'mistake' cost the British taxpayer....in postage costs alone?
  • Many thanks for your help here Chilton555. I too have received this letter and was going to double check on the telephone, but there was a queue of up to "35 minutes". I shall "file" it - but really the HMC should at least put out a generic message of explanation through the media to ease the minds of folks who have received it.
  • Just got off the phone from the SA Helpline and can confirm this is another Tax Office !!!! up, they have no official excuse yet other than these letters have been sent out in error.

They have been aware of the problem since yesterday but haven't amended there call system to save people the wait or even put a note on the website. They really don't help themselves or us!

Just got back home to my SA letter too. They amended my tax code months ago.

    • The rich buy assets.
    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

  • My tax code was adjusted months ago as well and I too received the letter, telephoned and was told a batch of these had been sent out erroneously to people who used to self assess. I did years ago but now my only income is work pension. I was told to ignore the letter. I doubt they will follow up with any more information though.
  • Applied and confirmed by HMRC but they say will be given on completion of self assessment return. I am retired and have not filled one in for years. Is it right? Don't want to start up returns again as it took ages to get off them!
