Marriage Allowance

It appears that you have to apply for the tax reduction in the name of the person who is having their tax code reduced - Rather than the person who is having their tax code increased..
I tried to do this on-line and failed - because I was trying to do it in my name - rather than my wifes (who is a non-earner)Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Yes, it's logical when you think about it, but many fell into that trap and had to reapply, myself included.• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

My wife lives with me in the UK on a UK Spouse visa. She doesn't have a UK Passport yet and her UK visa says "no recourse to public funds".
She is not working and has never worked in the UK.
She doesn't have a UK bank account yet either but she will be opening one soon.
Does anyone know if she would still be eligible to apply for the Marriage Allowance? I don't want to apply if she is ineligible as it may go against UK immigration rules.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!0 -
Is she allowed to work in the UK, does she have a NI number ? I would say that if she is allowed to work then you are entitled to part of her allowance. https://www.gov.uk/legal-right-work-uk0

If you both have a National Insurance number then I would say that is probably all that is needed to apply for the allowance.

Yes she is allowed to work in the UK and has a NI number.
Thank you for that we will look into applying then.

Just a quick heads-up after hearing from a family member that an email was received, purporting to be from HMRC. The sender knew their names and asked them to provide their National Insurance numbers to claim Marriage Allowance.
It's a scam. Don't respond to it.
To state the obvious, NEVER send any personal information in response an email.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Are you sure it was a scam e-mail. If you have registered your interest in the marriage allowance you will receive an e-mail to your name from HMRC inviting you to apply. MrsM has just received one and it looks genuine - but she responded to the last one and I received my first pay with the new allowance in June.0

Are you sure it was a scam e-mail.
Whilst I can't be entirely certain, I'm reasonably satisfied that it probably was an attempt at ID fraud.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

I also received that email Wednesday
Having already had an email in June (genuine) and sorted out our allowances I was very suspicious and did a double check on both emails which look virtually identical apart from Gov.uk.Team followed by no reply etc in the original sender address but not in the second one.
Tried phoning HMRC but there's a 35 min wait at the moment.0
