  • I registered my interest in March 2015 and received my link in July. My husband has received his new notice of coding so we hope to see adjustment in end of Aug income.

    Hi,

Sorry if this maybe a bit difficult to answer, but hopefully you can.

I made a mistake with my Marriage Allowance, switching mine's over to my wife, when it should have been the other way around. :rotfl:

Cancelled it, and they told me to get the wife to call, but gave up as after 5pm, whilst they say they are open to 8pm, can't get through.

So was going to do it online, however I note that the calculator says the benefit would be £118 per year.

Thing is the wife is on £10010 and I am on £24000.

So I'm a tad worried that she will actually end up paying tax, which may negate the saving? I have a pension I pay into, although the wife has normal tax code, so a tad worried it'll cost more, or is that impossible?

  • Just received my new P60 with the updated tax code. I was wondering if anyone knows whether this is backdated to 6th April when the scheme started, and if so should there be a rebate of some sort?

The PAYE system is cumulative, meaning that your new code will automatically give you the allowance back to 6 April.
  • What an excellent tip. Just done it online. Simple. Thanks, Martin

Thanks everyone. MSE Sam M and all the helpers.
We have just had the letter from HM Revenue & Customs and it says personal tax allowance received from partner£1060

    Another :money: saving.

:j We would not have known to apply for this saving if it was not for MSE.

Can a couple get this if the husband works, and the wife is a housewife and not earning?

And can it be backdated at all?

Yes, providing the husband is a basic rate tax payer. The wife will need to apply to transfer some of her allowance over to her husband.

The allowance only came in at the start of this tax year. If the husband is on PAYE, then provided their tax code is adjusted before the end if the tax year it should automatically be applied for the year so far in the next pay cycle.
  • HMRC website has been updated. You no longer need to "register an interest" in the allowance. All done and dusted in about 5 minutes online and awaiting email confirmation, promised within 24 hours.
