I like to see things in black and white when it comes to Govt regulations; the devil is often in the detail!
Thanks for your reply. Worth registering for the allowance.0 -
We registered our interest many months ago and, apart from HMRC's "we're working on it" e-mail in March, we heard nothing until an e-mail this morning with the invitation to apply. Successfully used the on-line system, needing only names, dates-of-birth and National Insurance numbers, together with a request to prove identity by supplying for the last four digits of an account number for an interest-bearing bank account: the system gave hints with three sort-codes, but we recognised only one (which we used). Were the other two deliberately false to fool an imposter?
Overall, easy to register but why did it take so many months? Perhaps to smooth-out the workload on the team sending out revised Tax Codes?0 -
I did exactly the same using the post office site then phoning and it worked easily. Why this can't be standard procedure I can't imagine!! I have now had my changed tax code. However, I have to pay tax! This could be awkward as I am registered as a non tax payer for interest at banks etc. This may mean that we shall be worse off by using the tax transfer. Therefore, how do I get my allowance back???0

Being a tax payer on income and having to pay tax on bank interest are not the same. You can earn up to £5000 bank interest tax free so your total income including interest can be up to £15600 with a tax code of 1060. I pay tax on my income but am registered for tax free interest.0

I've received my link today, but for this tax year we won't be eligible. My missus will give up work in August to go on Maternity leave.
So from 16/17, we will be eligible but not this year. When I registered I obviously had no idea when this would come.
Anyone know if I can just keep the link till next tax year, or when going through it can I complete it for next year?0 -

You will be eligible this year unless your wife pays tax at greater than 40%, it just won't do you any good, or harm.
Your code numbers should have been altered from 1016L to 1016M or 1016N the M and N indicate you are either giving or receiving the allowance and should be carried forward to next year by HMRC.The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Applied, got the link about a month ago. Completed it.
And my tax code has changed, just got confirmation last week.
Not too bad a process!365 Day 1p challenge - £371.49 / 667.95
Emergency Fund £1000 / £1000 ( will enlarge once debts are cleared)

Thanks,
That makes sense0 -
My wife got her application to donate her allowance to me and applied on-line but the system was unable to process the application so we were given a number to call.
It turns out both our N.I. numbers were registered at different old addresses. I just assumed that, as HMRC write to us both at our current address, that this is linked to the NI details... apparently not.
The lady on the other end was very helpful though and processed our application and also changed both our N.I. registered addresses for us over the phone.• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

One query I still haven't been able to get a definitive answer to is what happens if your salary increases after the allowance has been processed.
Example:- Before the allowance a salary below £42,385 would make you a basic rate taxpayer.
- After the allowance a salary below £43,445 would make you a basic rate taxpayer.
What would happen if someone earned £42000 when they applied but subsequently received a pay rise to £43000. They would be earning over the £42,285 the uk.gov website says is the upper limit for eligibility but at the end of the year would still be a basic rate taxpayer.
Would you have to inform HMRC and have the allowance removed making you ineligible forever unless your salary dropped in the future, or could you continue claiming as a basic rate taxpayer? :undecided• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.
