    Hence the term UGLY hack.

Don't yell at me, I didn't write or sell the software. I merely provided a solution to run the program that you may or may not have been aware of. Also don't be so dramatic, lead to unrecoverable data indeed. You might get some unexpected behaviour but it won't magically wipe your hard drive.
    Who's yelling? ;)

Anything that works on a modern OS, a key feature Money lacks.

YNAB has done the job for me for quite a while.
  • I bought a nice little ACER netbook about 3 years ago, just before COMET were about to close their doors for the last time. It was preloaded with Windows 7 Starter Edition, which was the brand spanking new OS at the time.

According to ACER's website, my machine (model number D270) doesn't qualify for the Windows 10 upgrade due to 'Microsoft restrictions' or something.

So don't believe it when they say most Windows 7 computers qualify for the upgrade.

I did try to download the App when I first received Martin Lewis's email about this before the summer, but with no luck. And I even contacted ACER Customer Services at the time who were about as useful as a wet towel.

    What a waste of time.

Have you actually tried to install it or are you just taking Acers word for it?
W10 will check your machines capabilities before installing itself.
Yours not working wouldn't make the word 'most' obsolete......;)

Why make it a bit of a drama?
Two machines updated here without any problems.

Have you got a link to the statement that it doesn't qualify?

I'm sure Microsoft would be more than happy for you to upgrade it to Windows 10. The issue is more likely whether Acer will supply updated drivers for it and support you through the process.

You might be interested in this statement too - apparently from an Acer support person, and I guess it's about the same device (and apparently with an error message, so it seems it's not a straightforward upgrade):
    http://community.acer.com/t5/Windows-10/Aspire-One-d270-cannot-take-W-10-quot-Display-Incompatible-quot/td-p/374361
I do not see this unit listed on the eligible units list website so drivers will not be uploaded to our support site for this model and the upgrade would be supported by Microsoft, not Acer. I can suggest that you remove the display driver and use a Microsoft version and see if that works. You can also visit the Microsoft Answer Desk for assistance with your issue, https://support.microsoft.com/#

Having said that, I suspect that it's not impossible. I've upgraded a much older Acer (but I made sure I had a backup of the previous setup first, and also tracked down all the latest drivers I could find before I started. Yours will presumably have Windows 7 drivers which is better than I had for mine). It is likely to be more hassle than the straightforward Win10 upgrade which most will have though.
