The laptop is used for MS Office applications and general internet browsing only.
I am sorting it out for a friend and bought one of these http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sandisk-120gb-ssd-sdssda-120g-g25-35-27-amazon-potential-31-01-with-bespoke-offers-2259284 the other day for another machine.I would be prepared to put in the Toshiba instead of reinstalling on the original HDD if it improves performance significantly.

The Sandisk is relatively poor, as compared to a Samsung EVO, but it should improve the performance off the Toshiba. The Toshiba with that CPU, needs all the help that it can get.
So yes, I would suggest that you install that SSD to the Toshiba and perhaps get a better SSD for the other if it is a better machine.

For the benefit of anyone who like me only has a slow broadband connection (1mbps download speed) and is thinking of updating to Windows 10 this was my experience of the process.

Day one - used the Windows 10 app notification to start downloading windows 10 update. The download took 8 hours and downloaded 3.3gb.

Day two used the Windows 10 app notification to proceed to next stage which was meant to be a 10 second preparation and licence acceptance. After clicking ok to proceed the notification said OK working on it and then disappeared leaving me wondering what was going on. After 10 minutes I decided to check windows update to see if it showed any progress and it stated Preparing to install. This was the worrying bit as it seemed to be stuck. After half an hour I decided to google "windows 10 stuck on preparing to install" and found that this was a common occurance. Apparently at this stage all the new drivers for use with windows 10 are downloaded. With my slow download speed this was taking ages and the progress bar appeared to be stuck, but by monitoring I could see it was moving very very slowly. 2 hours and 10 minutes later the preparing to install completed and the licence agreement appeared for acceptance. Accepted this and started the installation. This took another 1 and a half hours to complete.

Day three. Windows 10 appeared to be working ok but windows update had 8 new updates. These took another hour to download and install.

    Hope it is worth it.
    Regards
    erb :)

It looks like the licence keys for systems upgraded to win 10 are actually generic ones (so 1 key for all 10 Home upgrades, 1 for all 10 Pro etc) :rotfl: and work in combination with the (individual) licence key from the previous OS stored somewhere in the MS servers when the upgrade was activated and cross-referenced with the hardware.
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail

Thanks. Didn't think the Sandisk was that bad and thought I had got a bargain for less than £30!
From what you say it will improve the laptop and save my mate having to buy a new machine.
What about the drivers for this machine? I see some people have been having problems with graphic card drivers even with installing WIN10 by the MS standard upgrade.

yes , so you need to do an actual upgrade , not a clean install.
however once you have done an upgrade , you can reinstall on a blank drive and simply skip when it asks for the ser No.

if you go to command prompt (admin) and type in slmgr /xpr , it will then inform you that the machine is permanently registered by Microsoft.

if you try a clean install , without upgrading , you will have an un registered version of win 10 , and it will cost you £99 for a "key"

fortunately Microsoft made a mistake several yrs ago when they offered the "media centre" upgrade , by running this on a "hacked" copy of win 8 , it legitimises it ,

    good old Microsoft

The licensing position could get interesting if you do an in-place upgrade to Windows 10, then in a few months install a new mobo and think 'may as well do a fresh install too'. A call to the automated activation line should fix it...

ironically I changed a board this morning from a h81 to a z97 , spluttered a bit , but came up (after a bit of driver work) to say registered, dunno ,

I agree with you , are we signing up for a retail copy or a OEM copy?

Special mention there goes to useless Sony "Our team of technical engineers are currently hard at work fully testing the compatibility between our VAIO personal computers and Windows 10, and developing drivers and software, in order to ensure that your computer will be compatible with the latest operating system from Microsoft."

And it looks like it will take months for them to release stuff :rotfl:
"Testing results & compatibility information: August 2015
Upgrade instructions, drivers and applications: November 2015"
Backside covering exercise methinks.....I've been running 10 on VAIO since the insider programme started without any problems with any programmes or equipment.

Have you checked HP website for Win 10 drivers ?

Yes but can't find any there. Should this be fixed by an update? My laptop is running synaptics pointer v19.0.12.95. Alternatively I might just buy a usb mouse but will those on ebay will work with windows 10, if they don't say so specifically? (i.e. in item description "works with windows vista, 7, 8 etc" but no mention of 10 probably because it's so new?)
