BUT (continuing from my previous post) if you have 8 or 8.1 I'd recommend jumping straight to 10. It's a no-brainer. Nobody would prefer 8/8.1 to 10.

Yes but then pay for the luxury after your 1 year limit is up and pay for further updates? Indeed if it was totally free for 8.1 users, and there was no hidden small print after 1 year I would jump onboard.

Good point. Missed that one. I wonder if MS, whenever they start charging for 10 updates, will start charging for 8, 8.1 and 7 updates too!?

^ this. You have to pay to get or upgrade to Windows 10 after the first year.

Consider this though. UPDATES to Windows 10 after the first year may be chargeable. If you have Windows 7 you should consider this along with the fact that 7 is supported until January 14, 2020  For small business and home customers I will be advising to stick with 7, unless they have multiple clients and 10 can be evaluated in parallel with 7.

    Source?.....

After the first year MS haven't stated pricing for Windows 10 (new and upgrades) and whether they will charge for updates.

I've been running Windows 10 Preview on a far from new HP 8440p laptop originally supplied with Windows 7 and it's fine, has all the drivers for touchpad, wi-fi, etc. Even Cortana works with voice recognition and speech.

Runs well and the user interface for Windows 10 is miles better than 8.1, no need for 3rd party Start menu add-ins as it's there.

AFAIK the only versions of Windows 7 and 8.1 not eligible for the free upgrade within 1 year are the 'Enterprise' editions used by businesses.

NB Microsoft stresses this does not mean Windows 10 is ‘free for one year’ it means those who upgrade to Windows 10 within one year will have it free for life.

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost.

    Seems clear.

Thank for that! In summary, if you have Windows 8/8.1 there's no reason not to upgrade to 10 then.

so is this the definate answer, if you have 8.1 there will be no cost after installation what so ever? whether thats updates or anything. Even if you have had it installed for 1 year?
