    Speculate to accumulate.
M$ will have plenty in mind in offering a free update.
Whether its revenue through apps, the music service or in annual paid updates.
    nobody knows as of yet.

Why would it be 'Too good to be true'? It's the standard windows 10 update available to all.
Is that rock a really long way from this planet?;)

Because businessmen are in it to make money and they give nothing away free if it can turn in a quick buck (think "fox and chicken".)

I think Custardy has it about right when he says that M$ will have plenty in mind in offering the free update.

Look at the BT "Free sports channels". They were never free. They were always contract-dependent. Now BT are playing tricks with their customers making them pay £5 a month or reduce to BT lite (on a new 12 months contract) BT customers have learned the hard way what "free" really means.

People have every right to be sceptical of so called "free" offers. This is what MSE is about.

MS have already said how they are proposing to make their monies and it's no different to how they do now.
The answer is simple, if you are that suspicious don't download it or use it.

I can't recall seeing anything regarding Retail v OEM updates.

I understand that once you have updated, installation media will be available.
So are you going to have to download different versions for Retail and OEM?
    For example, I have,
    Win 8.1 Pro Retail,
    Win 7 Home Premium Retail
Dell (currently Win 10) running Dell Home Premium OEM Win 7

Obviously the Pro and Home are different, but what about the 2 Home variants?
    Move along, nothing to see.

    It is, as was 8.1.

Microsoft missed signing of RTM on time so new machines bought on or after the 29th July will come with W8.1 and will have to be upgraded in store or when buyer gets it home.
Manufacturers will not be able to test their drivers against W10 in time for launch, but, new machines will be available with W10 pre-installed shortly after official launch date.
So those waiting to buy a new PC with W10 installed will have to wait a bit longer.

It would be wise to wait a bit longer anyway. Much as there's the novelty of getting something new, it would be sensible to wait a couple months at least for it to be updated again (and again).

No points to be won for being a guinea pig.

I might be wrong, but this seems to be the most widely tested pre released OS weve ever seen...
