    Update KB2976978 on W8.1 machines has this description......

    I think there is one for W7 machines KB295266.
    These are said to be preparing machines for the final download AFAIK.
    Word is that they may begin a gradual (partial and sealed) download in the background days before the 29th to PC's registered for the update.
    No word yet that this background process will need approval or not on those machines..
    They seem determined not to make the same mistakes apple made and have their servers crash due to demand.
    Anyway, only time will tell, not long now. I have a laptop on the insiders programme and my main PC on W8.1 with a reservation. It'll be interesting to see what happens between the two.

    I ran the windows toolkit on a copy of the insiders version of win 10 , it returned the licence details , showing 180 days

    That is not the way I read the press releases, I would put money on the upgrades being downloaded to users hard drives before the "release" date meaning everyone can access it on that date, saves a hell of a server load.

    I agree. From my point of view the sooner they start the better as at my 1.2 mps download speed it is going to take a long time to download the 3GB of Windows 10 files.

    OK , had a machine here that I want to try the update setup on , clean install of win 8.1 , ALL the updates done , but would it offer me win 10 , umm no!

    found this on the inside previewers web forum

    a nice simple command line task for you to run , this makes Microsoft release the "reserve" icon to the machine.

    it will run in a loop , if you have , win 7 without SP or an unregistered version of 8/8.1 , or a version that will not be supported for the free update

    open notepad , copy from here and paste into notepad

    EG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\UpgradeExperienceIndicators" /v UpgEx | findstr UpgEx
    if "%errorlevel%" == "0" GOTO RunGWX
    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Appraiser" /v UtcOnetimeSend /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    schtasks /run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"
    :CompatCheckRunning
    schtasks /query /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"
    schtasks /query /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser" | findstr Ready
    if NOT "%errorlevel%" == "0" ping localhost >nul &goto :CompatCheckRunning
    :RunGWX
    schtasks /run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\gwx\refreshgwxconfig"

    then save it as a non txt file with the name of ReserveWin10.cmd

    save it , (I dumped it in sys32) run command prompt and the file , if you are running the correct version of windows , then the reserve icon will appear .

    That'll possibly be the machine preparation, they put an update on your machine earlier to enable that process.
    They are supposed to be signing off RTM tomorrow. Insiders to get one more release at least before 29th. It is possible that it could be the finalised version, unless there is a last minute tweak or two.

    just been looking at the method to convert the update into a iso file , seems simple enough http://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-turn-your-windows-10-upgrade-into-an-iso/

    test dummy machine sat here to see if I can extract the ESD file and dycript it , here,s the decrypter files http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/instructions-create-a-bootable-iso-file-using-esd/d2768b51-221a-436e-af4e-d3b9118a8864?page=1&tm=1433519642487&auth=1

    got to be a lot easier having a ISO , than having to do a win 7/8 full install to get ver 10 , after a rebuild

    Annoyed in that I dont want win10. After Months of not allowing windows updates on my win7 to avoid getting this update icon. A techie said that updating will be fine and wont add any icons to my desktop.

    Silly me believed him enough to allow a windows update. Now find I have this annoying little icon on my taskbar that I was assured would not happen.

    He can spend the rest of the time in removing it for me, whilst I learn never to take the word of a computer technician again. ;)
