Anyway the post I was making basically just said all I did was run the cmd prompt as admin. I've no idea why doing so made my icon appear - it may just have been a coincidence and MS had approved the new Intel driver so let it appear.
I got the same message and ended up posting the same message three times. Anothe MSE glitch following on from the 'timed out' problem.
I'll do the cmd prompt tomorrow when I get back to the laptop and then will stop stressing about it.
Thanks for your advice anyway.0 -
At the moment it's only a test release, so presumably it will undergo changes before the proper product is out (MS did changes after the final Windows 8 Beta).
The "if it ain't broke" comment about Windows 8 is amusing...:rotfl:Bedsit_Bob wrote: »Really?
Why?
I'm guessing you never had to be submerged with Vista whilst trying to wade through the processes of a new computer, trying to work and having previously gotten on very well with XP. Pretty bad enough to begin with, it got worse with use! When Windows 8 came along it wasn't amazing, but it was far easier to use and far faster to use compared to Vista.
In comparison to Vista, Windows 8 is far from broken!0 -
Regarding forum "glitches" ... the post box tends to block references to System 32 (without the space - I just got the same message making this post), as if it would be a hack attempt on the forum.
(Yes, I know ......)0 -

Windows 8 is an awful mish-mash of disconnected and inconsistent user interface metaphors and is designed (and I use the word "designed" advisedly) to meet the lowest common denominator of the capabilities of a cheap mobile phone.0 -
Native Windows 8 lasted about half an hour on this laptop before I downloaded and installed classic start menu. I tried Metromix but eventually just downloaded and made default conventional freeware programs to replace the apps I used so for the most part it now acts an awful lot like Windows 7.
I'll probably take a chance on 10 as soon as it comes out on the laptop. Depending on my experience with that the desktop, which is more important to me, may or may not follow.0 -

May not be to your taste, but given MS have kept it from 8 to 10 its probably here to stay with minor tweaks for a good number of years.
Unfortunately sometimes we all need to bite the bullet and learn the new ways, just as we did when the GUI changed from Win 3.1 style to the Win95 style which effectively stayed the style template to Windows 7.0 -
Why jump through hoops to get where you need when there is an easy way to get there?
Anyway MS have seen the error of their ways regarding the start menu...You’re already an expert

Windows 10 is so familiar and easy to use, you’ll feel like an expert. The Start Menu is back in an expanded form, plus we’ll bring over your pinned apps and favorites so they’re ready and waiting for you.
Regarding the apps I fail to see why a machine capable of multitasking would ever want a single app to use the entire GUI.
Windows 8 was just a mechanism for MS to try to push their failing smart phone interface onto desktop users in a futile bid to save it. Rather that save the mobile it damned near cost them the desktop in my case.0
