So... is it just about fashion and feeling "trendy"? "Moving with the times" for its own sake is just the inverse of the "appeal to tradition" fallacy.

That's why, supposedly, the word "new" is the most often used word in advertising. People fall for it without knowing whether it's a good thing or not.

What makes "new" better? And what makes upgrading to Windows 10 so incredible that someone would want to replace a fully-working, fully-supported OS?
Yes, I don't get this new=better thing, and another tactic is the use of the word "modern".

If something is better, then great, but I'm not seeing the newer versions as being better than Windows 7.

I know about that, I kept an eye on the four updates they wanted to install on window 7 PCs, and never installed them.
That is part of the over the top ways they are ready to go to trick people to update.
I have got a list of updates I try to prevent downloading on my laptop, but it is a question of checking each updates before downloading them, as they can try to download the same updates under other names.

Amazing, they can pretty much force that stuff on us, yet a few years ago they got into huge trouble just for including Internet Explorer with the operating system.

I don't do automatic updates, but every time I look at my "Optional" updates, Windows 10 is ticked for installation. Only a matter of time before it creeps on to my Mum's laptop...

The simple answer to those paranoid about Microsoft spying on them is surely not to use Windows.
Not saying Linux in its various flavours doesn't spy on you, but at least there's not one "megacorp" behind it...
The sooner we accept that Windows has had its day, the better. Popular opinion is that XP was best, Vista stank, 7 OK, 8 rubbish, 8.1 only marginally better rubbish and 10 is not really any better than 7, if at all.

I doubt your opinion on Windows having had it's day is in anyway universal. Meanwhile...........in the real world.....;)

I just bought a Windows tablet for running some radio software I want to play with, The tablet hardware is pretty impressive for the price I paid ( < £80 delivered for a 9" 1920x1200 screen ) and it does run reasonably smoothly BUT if I'd wanted this as a tablet device rather than as a small cheap PC for running some Windows based software I'd have been pretty disappointed.

I can just about put up with 10.1 as-is on a laptop and desktop so long as I avoid all that modern apps stuff and had thought that with a touch device it would all start to make some sort of sense. Well to my mind trying to use the thing as a tablet is very frustrating and falls far far short of the Android experience. To be fair it only arrived today and I've spent more time running the updates and setting up PC type stuff on it than playing tablet but when I first picked up an Android device is all seemed very natural and easy to use pretty much immediately.

I must have spent a total of at least 60 hours trying to upgrade my Samsung RV511 to win 10.

Ive tried in safe mode, Ive download the media tool - I spent over 2 hours on line to a nice young lady in India last night who told me to disable video card and that would do the job. 1.30 a.m. in the morning and nope, it didnt do the job.

I ge the same problem every time, it says my laptop is compatible (I had wondered if 3 g ram was too small and causing problem), it goes through all the processes and teases me saying it is installing the win 10 and will reboot "several times". It boots once and then ................nothing, a black screen with the windows icon.

When I switch off and on it tells me that it was unable to install and that installation failed in SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation.

Does anyone (clearly not MS technicians) know of a way to sort this please. I am happy with 7 but I keep getting messages on my laptop urging me to upgrade. I have also had a mail from hotmail or whatever its called now, saying if I dont upgrade my emails may not work properly.

Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.
