Well,
I break the trend ...
I love top sheets.
We do have a duvet, but so e times still do use blankets too.
But also, I personally struggle with the idea a thin cotton sheet is sufficient to keep a duvet protected from body odours. ( the duvet has a cotton quilt on top for the kiwi who hops on the bed at night and for dog dog, who joins me for naps in the day time. The cats sleep under the covers skin to fur with us.....they raise one furry eyebrow each at the idea that they are dirty. ( but they can be)
Top sheets mean that in summer if foundinrates is hot, he can kick the covers off but still have a sheet over him so that any invading mosquito has at least some defences set up against it. And the delight of a breeze from the open window catching under a loose top sheet is incredible.
On a really, really, really hot night, those ones where you'd rather die than have covers, removing your top sheet, wetting it, wringing it out hard and putting back over the bed ( but not tucking it in, even though its well wrung out no point putting damp things hard next to mattresses or furniture) keeps you cool and comfortable
And the decorative potential along the tops of top sheets can simply be a joy in themselves..

Some valid points LIR, but you're still not selling it to me! :rotfl: I do remember though anytime I stayed at my parents house (my Mam uses them) feeling all secure and tucked in like you did when you were little, but then having a fight with them when you got up to go to the loo or something!
I feel the cold way too easy, and the thought of putting a damp sheet on my bed (even if it is red hot outside) fills me with horror! :eek:0 -
You know how the duvet can slip down inside the cover, and leave and annoying flap of cover that flops on your face? I call that "haddocking".
Top sheets are even worse for haddocking - guaranteed to wake you in the night
Now that is irritating! One of my duvet covers had a slightly silky finish to it, and it always did that, annoyed me so much that I threw it out!0 -
Morning my lovelies,
You have been chatting but I have been away from the computer for a day or two due to various things.
Hugs and duvet forts and jaffa cakes to everyone that needs them.
Have to say I don't like top sheets but my husband does. He has a cleaner once a week for a couple of hours. Well he is not very tidy and does not clean up. They are great, change his bed, put the stuff in the machine, put his washing out on his racks etc Well worth the money. And means I don't have to say anything and get cast as the baddy.
Broke my bike  Had it 5 months and used about the same amount of times and the chain came off and wedged itself against the frame. Back to halfords on monday. Thats annoyed me as I wanted to use it more as I have decided after putting on 2lbs this week. Which I thought was rather good after all the crap I ate. I want to sort out my weight.
had some mega cleans ups over the last few days. Even hoovered down the stairs. Normally brush it down but so dusty due to the work that has been done in the house. And will be again supposed future work to be done by me :rotfl:
Bedding and knickers in the machine. Wearing my last clean pair today  I thought I had more pairs then that. Obviously not!!!
Problem is I am on a water meter so don't like using the machine half full. I wear one pair of jeans pretty much all week and 3-4 t-shirts and depends on the weather socks. So it never really is a full load!!!!!!
Any way I have written an essay and just thinking about what I am going to do for the rest of the day. Read, start a cross stitch, watch films. Who knows!!!!

I feel the cold easily too.. But those nights still happen occasionally. Not so much in uk admittedly. ( i haven't always lived here;)). But when they do many here don't like them very well.

My machine weighs loads or something. I'd love to have the problem of not being able to find enough to wash..
We have enough socks to let build up into a big wash which I put through with other 'woollens' like darker jumpers or coats etc ( I work through the winter washing through the summer this way too....winter coats etc). I use to hand wash bras but now put them through the hand wash cycle in the machine in a pillow case or laundry bag, with knickers, my silk pillowslips, other delicate clothes and less 'dirty' clothes that need a light wash rather than actual pounding mud or stains out of them.0 -
I must admit, if it's really, really hot, I do use just a loose sheet, and kick the duvet off., and I have a couple of sheets just for that purpose. Especially as my bedroom faces SSE, so it can be hot if there's a heat wave. (A heat wave? What's that, then?)
The one thing that annoys me about hotels is the way they make the beds. The sheet/blankets etc are always tucked in too low down on the bed. I like at least a sheet to be right up under my chin. So you go to pull it up, and it's been tucked in all round the bed with a vice-like grip! So I have to pull everything out from under the mattress, and make it how I want it. Then the next day, it's remade, too low down and vice-like grip, and so I have to remake it all over again!
Very occasionally, you get a chambermaid who cottons on to what you want, and makes it accordingly. On the rare occasion that happens, they get a good tip from me!
My favourite ever duvet cover had a large flap at the bottom, extending beyond the edge if the duvet. This was so you could tuck the flap under the mattress to stop the duvet 'walking' in the night. It was great! Unfortunately, it eventually wore out, and I simply could not find another cover with this feature. So now, I often find my feet sticking out the end. I'm not especially tall, only 5'6", but as I said before, I do like the duvet to snuggle right under my chin and ears.
To go down the king-size duvet route would be very expensive!
Being asthmatic, I use double everything, to extend the life of the duvet. A while back, I decided to splash out on silk, as it has a closer weave than cotton and so is greater protection against housedust mite and is more hypo-allergenic than cotton or polyester. So I got silk-filled, silk-covered duvets, silk duvet covers and silk sheets! I always have two fitted sheets on the bed, one silk, and the other either silk or a patterned cotton, ditto the duvet covers, and three pillowcases on each pillow......one a protector, one silk and one patterned cotton. That way, the duvet, mattress and pillows stay pristine, and I stay relatively wheeze-free!(I just lurve spiders!)

We got a silk filled duvet last year, and it have to admit I am really liking it. Ours is four seasons, and io was suspicious because I have hitherto been a two plus duvet person through much of the year, but, even though it was a mild winter this performed really well.
Silk sheets are something we are seriously considering, mainly for fir's skin ( psoriasis), but I know the animals will make a mess of them in no time so I am little dubious.
What are the silk filled pillows like? I am on a hunt for decent pillows, I jugs cannot find ones I like......0 -

Me neither. The amount of pillows I have gone through is unbelievable! They're either too hard, too soft, too high, too low, or some other reason. I bought some of this website, and they had over 30 positive reviews, everyone was raving about them....but little miss picky here found a fault with them!
If you find some decent ones, let me know!0 -

I used silk-filled pillows for a few years, then switched to a very, very soft goosedown pillow, which I found better for supporting my neck. The silk ones were a bit too flat for me. Another brand might have been better, though. Wouldn't swop the duvet and sheets, though, worth every penny.(I just lurve spiders!)
