tog: fried up 1 onion, 2 fat garlic segments, 1 leek, added splodges of cumin, coriander and garam masala, cooked for a while. Stirred through 3 carrots, 1 potato, some swede. Cooked for a while longer. Added in my first ever pot of chicken 'broth' (made from boiling the carcass?). Zapped it all once cooked. Hey presto! 4 generous portions, so 1 is already eaten.

Mince is on hold - dh still not eating and he'd not be keen on the smell of cooking food... But will prob be fried up onion + garlic (spot a pattern in my cooking here...?), add spices, then mince, then tomatoes (a tin if we have it). Some bulk out with oats/pulses/lentils but I'm doing a grain and pulse free eating thingy so avoiding all that, and will prob grate in some swede. May turn it into a shepherd's pie...

    Afternoon all,

Back from the hen do and had a lovely time, thank you for all your well wishes. Spent about £35 in cash and that included buying a gorgeous candle holder for my home - needs a bit more personalisation and girlifying now I'm on my own. Need to check my bank in a few days as the tube now takes contactless cards at the same price as Oyster cards :) so used mine all weekend but now don't know what I paid for tube travel.

Three spendy days but all definitely worth it, looking forward to a frugal week and off out to my parents for a free dinner in a bit :)

Glad you had a good weekend, Fmess. And cheap too!

Today I am grateful for oak trees, for playing in the playground with dd, for strong coffee, for finally starting to make pillow protectors from a ripped sheet, for cookies!!!!

I'm not sure I've posted all month! I'm doing ok with NSD's and budgets aren't too bad. Did a car boot sale with my mum this morning and it went pretty well.

Had an awful busy weekend with family coming over from Up North and a friend from Taiwan. *Phew* So tired today, especially after 6am get-up on a Sunday. Wish I had the ability to nap...

Hope everyone has enjoyed the weekend. Hen do sounded good, Fmess- amazed at how little you managed to spend! :T

Hello all... Had another spend day today as I got talked into buying ice cream from one of the vans that seems to know parking outside our house makes good business sense... :rotfl: so not a huge spend, but still a spend. Will probably be going fro a birthday drink with a friend later too, so will probably be expected to buy a couple of drinks. We can't stay out late though, what with one thing and another.

In other areas, a very successful day. I got my 10% award at Weight Watchers with a 3lb loss.

I have also cleared a plot of ground ready for some seed potatoes, but they're a couple of days off being the best to put in the ground. Gives me time to do more spade work , I suppose!

Also, did a smashing roast lamb for din dins. :)

    Today, I'm grateful for:

    • my garden - it's better than a gym, it's free exercise!
    • my WW group - I think I have this sussed now.
    • a friend with the knowhow is showing OH how to fix his homebrew issues, so hopefully we'll get back to doing that because it was fun. Hedgerow booze!!! :D
    Keep reading books!
August grocery challenge budget £150, spent so far £45.95, remaining £104.05.

A SFD. Very quiet (lazy) day. However I can nearly manage to go down stairs consecutively (rather than one foot then the other) and part of the way up pulling on the handrail.

Today I am grateful for books, for my laptop and for household appliances that work (a number of people on other threads are having problems, things breaking or tripping the fuses).

  • Hello turtles, I have escaped from London! You've all been really busy over the last few days!
London wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be, to be fair. I spent a bit on food, and bought some drinks at my friend's birthday party (which, as someone who lives in the North, I thought were extortionate! £5 for a vodka and coke!?) but other than that, fairly cheap days of walking around London seeing the sights.
Back on it today with LTW, and hoping it won't be a spendy day as well :)
Bought my first house in 2014 - now, to be mortgage free! :D

Been as usual absent over the weekend. We had two kids birthday parties and spend about £30 on presents and associated costs.

On Friday we saw the bank about a mortgage (more later) and then came home to find our neighbour in our back garden finishing off the step between two terraces :j. He done the wall September 2013 (we did pay him for the whole job) and never had time to finish it, on Wednesday OH "threatened" to do it himself could he borrow a chisel. Viola

Don't think we would have gotten it done ourselves anyway as we atm don't get anything done apart from keeping the kids entertained and uninjured. DD still ended up in A&E with a massive swollen foot. Apparently an infection (from where?) but is a lot better now.

So saw the N@tionwide guy on Friday and got told we need to fill out a mortgage in principle application online. It's not very good. You have to guess your houseprice as they don't send a valuer out till much later, they take into a account any CC no matter what the interest but not overdrafts (found out OHs is 2k , so he is actually never in the black, but didn't matter for this application). Then they ask about childcare and I think that's where we made a mistake as we also listed the childcare vouchers (although they are a pretax deduction) and it looked like we're paying £1300 rather than the 700 we actually pay out of post-tax wages. But they never asked about pensions or anything either which could make a big difference to your take home pay. It was all a bit weird and we got rejected. OH is going to phone the guy we spoke to on Friday because I think the childcare thing was wrong. They didn't even get to the credit check section so having taken out a new (despite 0%) CC in the last few months didn't even come up yet. Also what does 700 on a 0% CC matter if you got 2 k in saving they never ask about? All a bit mysterious.

OH is going to the states for a whole 7 days at the end of June so i will be able to spend the bare minimum and just eat with the kids which should save a lot on groceries etc. Got £70 left till the end of the month but that'll have to do as I just done a £50 LIDL shop on Saturday for the next whole week.

I also got a big to do list for when he's away (might start early) with things like find stuff to sell, clean and sort the garden out. Not having to cook dinner or do dishes after the kids are in bed should free up loads of time ;)

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
Thrifty - I have to say for anything mortgages I think a broker is worth their weight in gold. A good broker that is. We've had ours for 10 years & what that woman can't do doesn't need doing! Can you look for some local recommendations for one? Filling things in online for such a massive thing is never going to get you the same service as an expert human being. We've also never had to pay her a penny as she takes her cut from the deal she arranges. So that's good too.
