is my husband hiding money?

Ive been advised from the tax credit forum to come here for help and advice.
Ill try to keep it short.
My husband works full time and we were claiming ctc. He paid the majority of the bills from his wages and I would pay the rent, school dinner moneys and packed lunch from the child tax ccredentials. Ot would leave me £10 per week to live on which was just awful.
So last year I decided to get a part time job. I earn roughly £94 per week.
I knew our tax credits would reduce a bit this year with the extra income but yesterday when I went to pay my rent this week there was only £100 in my account from child tax credits. I was shocked and called the helpline to be told there was no mistake. That meant they reduced it by £80. This means my £94 wages will onlu leave me with £14 after paying my usual bills.
Checked my husband wage slip from last year and it says he was on just over £1300.
The guys on the tax credit forum made me think he must have had a raise.
I emailed him today and he said this year he had a raise of £450.
He does pay most of the bills. All I pay is rent and school meals. But I am now going to have to live on £14 a month and my husband wont help. He says he doesn't have a lot of money either.
I just feel like life surely cant be this bad? I don't know what im going to do.

Tell your husband you now have to choose between paying the rent and eating.....

Then follow it through and don't pay the rent......
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You need to sit down and talk to him. You can't live off £14 a month - how do you get to work? I'd be leaving my OH if he handled money like this.

When you say you have £14 a week to live on, what do you mean? What does that have to cover? Food for the family? Children's clothing? Family days out? Or is it your personal spending?

1: ah tax credits are based on the previous years earnings.

So it sounds like you were overpaid last year?

2: let's say you weren't. He's had a pay increase of £450 (per year or per month ?) - i'm guessing per year. That's £37.50 per month, pre tax. £8.65 per week.

Not a huge amount to hide.

3: it sounds like he brings in roughly 1.5x what you do. After Job, CB and CTC/WTC. - So I'd expect him to be paying a fair amount of the expenditure. Are you saying he isnt? Or is he paying of family debts etc. EG BNPL?

If it was me if be looking at how much better off is be as a single parent. I thought marriage meant sharing the responsibilities equally? What does he do with 'his' money?

£14 per week*, or £60.66p per month, on personal items. Which isnt terrible.

We dont know what he has, if anything for personal items

Of course your husband has to help! He's your husband, your children's father .... he lives in the house, eats the food, uses the utilities just as you do. It isn't "his money" and "my money" it is "family money" and the two of you need to rearrange your financial obligations so that all bills are paid and no single party is left to struggle.
  • To be fair he pays the gas, electricity, food, sky tv/phone/broadband, car, loan, council tax.
I have to buy all the kids clothes, shoes, school uniforms, school stationary etc, haircuts, coats, birthday and Christmas presents etc using the child benefit.
I pay the rent and school meals with the ctc and my wages.
The £14 per week I would have is for my personal belongings (clothes, toiletries, travel etc).
