Also, my flat lease states that smoking is prohibited in any inside space, so you could in some flats be breaking the lease.

While walking down a few stairs may be inconvenient so is being evicted and losing your deposit, or like my ex wife going to hospital everyday for six months for chemotherapy.

Smokers forget how obvious the smell is to non-smokers. If you were my tenant I'd know you were a smoker as soon as I walked in flat, whether you smoked out a window or at the front door.

I agree that it is your home, but it's someone else's house and they have to consider rental after you. I've turned down otherwise perfect rented properties because they had lingering smoke, and when we were buying wouldn't even consider buying one that had been lived in by smokers, it is just so hard to get rid of the smell.

Realistically, a landlord is going to find it difficult/impossible to evict you, even if you are breaching the contract by smoking in their property. Most aren't going to bother pursuing you through court to try to get you kicked out early because it's a pain and involves expense. They'll just choose not to renew your tenancy when the term ends and will try to hang on to a good chunk of your deposit for smoke damage.

However, I don't see the point in persisting to smoke indoors when there's an incredibly easy alternative: get off your bum and go outside! Why disrespect someone and their home when you could so easily walk outside?

Would you be willing to pay for total redecorating of the house and new carpets because the ones in your rental property stank of smoke? With my lodgers smoking is completely out. I would evict anyone who lied to me about it.
  • Why not smoking in bathroom? It has the best ventilation IMO. I did it for the past 8 years or so (unless I am outside). Though my landlord didn't mind me smoking nor the contract bans smoking.
Still the best option is just to quit it. (I quitted in last Sep after 9 years of smoking)

Outside has the best ventillation, smoking in a bathroom will not prevent it entering other areas of the property causing nicotine damage and damage to the landlord/any people carrying out works on the property and not pleasant for the next tenant.

Well done on quitting!! Big pat on the back needed.

A non smoker can easily tell if they meet a smoker. The smell is in their hair, clothes, skin and breath.
Some smokers smell very, very smokey as they do not wash or dry clean their outer clothing often enough.
Most smokers are completely unaware of this cloud of smoke smell surrounding them.

I can tell which of my pupils come from smoking homes, it is surprising how much it clings, I have colleagues who smoke and despite doing it outside the smell is still very strong.

    Basically it's like this:

Whatever your term is, 6/12/18/24 months. That's how long you'll be there.

After which eviction and possibly some post deposit.

I've smoked in most rented properties. Only once had an issue, but it wasn't on the tenancy agreement. Though I've now stopped ( or close to )

If you are moving house, then its a good time to quit , move to ecigs, or at the least smoke outside.

Many years ago to used to smoke in the house, but then moved to smoking only outside. I haven't smoked for 2 years now, used ecigs, slowly decreased the nicotine content, until I was 0% then 6 months later gave up the ecigs. It amazes me now much smokers and their property smell.
