PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

  • Hello

I had 3 Lloyds loans taken out between 1997-2000, and I believed I had PPI on all 3 but no longer had any documents.
Lloyds have agreed to payout over £1500 against the 2nd loan as they could verify the PPI on that loan but have not upheld my other complaints as they say they have no records to show PPI on these.
I'm pleased to accept the payout though disappointed none the less that the other complaints were not upheld, especially as the last loan was for the highest amount. I was also told on the phone by one of their staff, who called to verify my employment status at the time, that all 3 loans had PPI but now they say this was a mistake on the member of staffs part.
I did complain to their CEO about this and requested a copy of the conversation in question. They agreed to contact my local branch at the time to see if any other records were held as well as to supply a copy of the phone recording. However, they have not done either of these things and are just falling back on what information they have available to them via their loans department. I have done a DSAR request but am not really hopeful it will turn anything else up to help my case given how long ago the loans were taken out.
All in all, I found the response from the CEO's dept. very disappointing given what they said they would do and what they ended up not doing. But given the lack of any documentation, I know the FOS cannot help me. All I have is 3 account numbers!

Unfortunately this comes down to the fact you cannot prove you paid it, thus they cannot refund - a slip of the tongue by a phone person will not get you a refund.

CEO will just have referred the complaint back to the PPI team.

See what comes of the SAR, if it confirms what they said then at least you know thy were telling the truth and £1500 is better than nothing.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Due to the years being close when you took these loans out, it is possible that these loans were consolidations, I am surprised that they paid on the second but not the last due to no info, Surely they would have info later rather than earlier ??? see what the Sar request brings and keep us posted.
  • Hi All

I wanted to share my success story!
I went onto the Barclays website and put in a reclaim for PPI on a loan. Within 2 weeks and no hassle, they sent me a cheque for over £984

At the same time, I completed a form for Barclaycard. Their response took a little longer, but yesterday I recieved a letter telling me I was being paid £11,798.75
I didnt know all the details, but what I had was enough!

I am still in shock, but wanted to share. I now have enough to be debt free - and never will I go back there.

Anyone thinking is it worth it? Absolutely! I only did it on the off chance!

    Good Luck!!
  • When all the hype initially started about PPI complaints, I thought it would just be a huge hassle with no success but my Mum convinced me otherwise and I'm so glad she did!

I had successful claims against, RBS, MBNA and Clydesdale but Capital One without any trouble but Capital One fought me all the way. I am finally glad to say that they have lost the battle!

I submitted my claim MORE THAN 3 YEARS AGO as I was not aware that I had been paying PPI (I requested a SAR and found that PPI had been added to my account without my knowledge, 6 months after the account was opened).

My claim was rejected so I took it to the Ombudsman. It took them nearly 2 and a half years, but the complaint has been resolved in my favour. I received a letter from Capital One this week confirming a refund of £1.4k within the next 21 working days. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Let this be a lesson to everyone, it really wasn't hard to fill out the forms and although Capital One took years to settle, I didn't give up because I knew I was right!

Good luck to all those still fighting!!!
  • After 2.5 years finally awaiting confirmation of compensation from Capital One following ruling from Ombudsman. Made claim using MSE template capital one rejected so sent to ombudsman. Initially they upheld in their favour - i appealed on a factual error as they stated i took it out when i got the card. I had a copy of my application which clearly showed i opted out. ppi appeared on my statements 3 years later when card changed from a classic card to a different one. I have worked in the public sector since 1999 so employment conditions were sufficient. Anyway cut a long story short the appeal was upheld in my favour but capital one rejected giving an account of what i 'would' have said in a conversation but was not an actual transcript. 2 weeks ago heard back from ombudsmen saying following their involvement cap one will be making me an offer. I have calculated i paid about £1k in ppi so even this as a minimum will be a nice bonus before xmas! My advise is if u believe you were missold hang in there. Which cap one were as swift and thorough as MBNA who upheld my claim in 8 weeks and paid up £3200 within a further 4 weeks although the reasons were different

On the heels of my success with HSBC BarclayCard have written to me today with an offer of £644!

To everyone who is still struggling with the various financial companies persevere as it's worth it in the end.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
  • Hi folks,

After a long year and a referral to the FOS I have been successful in my PPI claim from Welcome Finance. Does anyone have any idea how long I now have to we to be reimbursed? I am sure it is in this thread somewhere but it is a bit of a read!
    Many thanks
  • In August I wrote to the Halifax asking for a PPI refund on my credit card. Apparently they 'lost' my letter or it didn't get to them. I rang them up and was sent a claim form, which I took a copy of and returned. After about 4 weeks I got a call from them, answered a few more questions and was then sent a letter confirming I would receive a cheque for £2100-odd within a few days. All for the price of a stamp. The wife has now sent a couple of forms off, and she is waiting to hear about her claims.
  • In April 2012 we put in a complaint to Intelligent Finance about PPI that had apparently been applied to a loan we had taken out in 2003 and repaid early 2 1/2 years later (only found out by chance when having a clear out and came across the final settlement statement which had a random credit on it). The complaint was not upheld so in July 2012 we took it to the Financial Ombudsman. Well to cut a long boring story short we received a letter from the Ombudsman on Monday after 28 months and they have upheld our complaint :j We now have to wait for Bank of Scotland to contact us. I have no idea how much we will receive, the loan was for 20,000 and ran for 31 months and I would imagine was frontloaded but whatever we're happy to have won.

    Wins to date: Lloyds x 2 loans £ 1,767
    Sainsburys loan £ 1,200
