A few weeks ago I did an SAR to see if my OH had PPI on two small loans he had in 2003 and 2006. He did so I used the template letter and a form that Halifax request. My OH said it would never pay out.....how wrong was he, 5 weeks later just over 3.5k awarded as compensation! Thank you!

Let this be a lesson to all - you CAN do it yourself, the process is straightforward and you DO NOT need a Claims Company

samtoby's OH got 3.5k back, imagine losing around 1.1k of that to some firm who do nothing more than post your letter

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • My mum got back over £10,000! in PPI. I worked for a bank dealing with PPI claims so know how it all works. She downloaded a questionnaire from Martins site, sent it off and a few months later was £10,000 better off!

Only shes not £10k better off! she had to pay it in the first place for it to be refunded so its only really the interest which makes her better off.
  • Being new to this forum lark, am not sure if it's in this post I should be
    telling our tale.

Basically 2 years ago a relative put in a claim with Barclaycard,
as they had recently checked through their bank statements and found a
payment still going to barclaycard even though the card had been paid off.

Then a phonecall received from barclaycard stated that there was no payment protection on his card, and so there was no claim!

On looking at the bank statements they found that the payment protection had been canceled by barclaycard.
When they then called barclaycard again, they were told that they had never had payment protection on their card.

Even when they said they could provide bank statements showing the payments going to barclaycard, for this they were told it would not ne enough.
They were also told by Barclays that the ombudsman would not be able to help either because he did not have the original agreement, and their (Barclays) records show that he never paid any!!!!

Fast forward to today, and when moving a desk lo an behold underneath was found the Barclaycard Payment Protection form received form Barclays with the start date in 2004, and the certificate number.

So my question is, can we now go ahead and fill in yet another claim from from here
    and send it to Barclays?
Or go straight to the ombudsman?

What is the best thing to do please xxx

You'll have to request the Bank re-opens your complaint, introducing the new evidence and asking them to reconsider in that light.. Since you only had six months from the date of your original rejection to refer to the Ombudsman, you have no access to that service.

What I don't understand was how Barclays were able to dismiss your statements showing (apparently) PPI payments? Did the bank deny that these payments were PPI? Could they be something else?

Remember, the original agreement is not proof that you actually paid PPI. On a credit card, PPI is only paid as a percentage of the balance carried forward each month.

What were you claiming: PPI on a Mortgage from 1993

Who was the provider: N&P (became Abbey National now Santander

How much did you get back: £560 plus interest Total £1197

Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: filled out Martins template and sent accompanying letter. received acknowledgement letter, then follow up letter 4 weeks later so say they were looking into it. Then a phone all to basically answer questions I'd already answered in the template. finally a letter with the offer. Taken approximately 6 weeks.

And then write your brief reclaim tale:
I'd put off reclaiming PPI because it was paid to National & Provincial who then became Abbey National and now Santander so wasn't really sure who to write to. (I wrote to Santander). Included the template, a letter and the mortgage statements from 1993-1997 and posted then off.

Also the PPI was on a mortgage which started in 1993, but I cancelled the PPI in 1997 when I realised it was optional and that it only paid out for 24 months. They were sly as it was included within the single mortgage payment.

Given the time frame (1997 was 17 years ago) I really didn't think they'd entertain a claim for mis selling. But I'm happy to report they did.

So for any one else thinking it was too long ago. Have a re-think and get your claim in.

What were you reclaiming: Credit Card
Who was the provider: Lloyds TSB 2007
How much did you get back: £962
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: Completed the form and sent it in
brief reclaim tale: Completed the form on the TSB website and sent it off. Got a phonecall asking basically the same questions as I had answered in the questionnaire, today received a letter offering £962!! Over the moon with this, although they have listed in their calculations £1.22 interest at 8% - my calculation makes 8% of £960ish around £70 so I will phone on Monday and ask how they came to £1.22.

    What were you reclaiming: Loan
Who was the provider: Lloyds TSB 2001
How much did you get back: £4,382.70
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: Completed the form and sent it in
brief reclaim tale: Completed the form and then had similar phone call to me asking same questions, received the letter today offering the sum above - DELIGHTED with this!

I am still waiting to hear back about a loan that I had, the deadline for the 8 week response time is up on Friday of next week, the two above were to be responded to by Tuesday 28th, so hopefully I will have another letter at the start of the week.

Would definately advise claiming if you think you have ever been given PPI without being advised it was optional.

I believe, stand to be corrected of course, with credit card PPI they only pay interest where, were the PPI not paid, you would have been in credit on the card i.e. no debt hanging over causing you to pay interest - so you do not get interest on your refund of premiums as, if your card was in debt at the end of the month (i.e. not fully paid off, thus PPI was charged), you would have incurred interest anyway - it's only if the PPI would have tipped it over which is likely given how little it charged.

Congrats on your win but you did not win because you were not told it was optional, that is a hearsay complaint for which I doubt you had any evidence (it's a he said, she said type complaint). The relatively small amount suggests an auto-payout or possibly some other identified failing which they have not advised you of. People need to present solid, evidence based complaints, unless they get lucky with an auto-payout or due to some other failing, a complaint solely based on what may have been said at the time will not win.

Who was the provider: Lloyds TSB
How much did you get back: £just over £6000
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: Had been sent a form from Lloyds so filled it in and sent it off
brief reclaim tale: I completed a form from Lloyds Bank about a loan I had taken out a few years ago.
Credit to Lloyds they also looked at several other loans I had taken out as well but did not include in the form. Some were partly upheld and a couple (including my original complaint) was fully upheld :)
I was not expecting anything back to be honest, but I thought 'nothing ventured'.... and I got a nice windfall that allowed me to go on hols tis year and also put some my savings.

Motto from this: try and see, you never know. The worst that can happen is that they (the banks etc) say no..... which leaves you no worse off that you are already. And you may well get a sum back ...so better off they you were.

  • Hi, I am new to MSE so please do bear with me.

I am looking for some advice on whether it is possible to claim back PPI on loans or Visa that have been written off?

I recently signed up to Experian and found a credit rating of 'Good'. I haven't paid any of my debts in the last 6 years due illness and they are not showing up on my the credit report.

A friend has suggested making a claim for misold PPI on a loan with Yorkshire Bank, but having not paid the debt off myself I didn't think this was possible.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    TIA
