  • I just wanted to pop by to say thanks to amersall and -taff for your help when I asked for it!

I received a letter today from Lloyds with confirmation that my complaint has been upheld and I will receive the sum of £7563.00. This is much much more than I anticipated and I can't begin to thank you both and others for their help on MSE.

My SAR was requested late July with my initial complaint sent around 14 August.

    One delighted nutty!
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice
  • I thought that I couldn't claim compensation as I ended the PPI policy for my Abbey National/Abbey mortgage about 10 years ago.

After reading the guidance on this webpage,
I was motivated to find the paperwork and then I followed the step by step guide. I've just accepted an offer of £6,119 from Santander (which bought Abbey). The whole process took less than a month.

Thank you for this unexpected windfall. :j

Following a letter last week from GE Money, that looked like a standard brush off letter that they might send to discourage further efforts to claim, I have received another letter from them this morning.

They say that the PPI was sold to us by DM Design Bedrooms Ltd., and not GE Money and that I should take my complaint to that company instead. They also say that it was underwritten by Commercial Union and that it was taken out in September 2000.

Are they correct - even though DM Design were clearly selling on behalf of GE Money - and, if they are, is there any point in going after a much smaller company like DM Design?

The PPI was, I believe, fraudulently added by the salesperson after we had signed. I was and still am self-employed and, at that time, my wife wasn't working (apart from being a full-time mum).

    Any advice?

    What were you reclaiming: Loan
    Who was the provider: HSBC
How much did you get back: £3997.25
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: Letter from HSBC with questionnaire
And then write your brief reclaim tale:

I received a letter and questionnaire from HSBC in June/July stating that I might have been mis-sold PPI on my loan, and if I believed that this was correct, could I fill out the questionnaire with relevant details and information.

I did this, thinking that if anything I wouldn’t get much, but was delighted this morning to receive a letter up-holding my complaint and offering £3997.25 (including interest, minus tax), which they are applying to an outstanding debt I have with them – which is great as I’m working hard to pay of this debt and this brings my payment date closer by just under 2 years!

Needless to say I have signed the acceptance form and sent the letter straight back. :T

The loan was taken out just after graduation from university, to consolidate my various university debts into one (credit cards/overdrafts etc), when I was a bit greener in relation to financial details. I had a steady job at the time with a global company, which offered 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay in sickness and no prospect of redundancies. I also was under the assumption that the PPI was a compulsory part of the loan.

The size of the firm you complain to has no bearing on a mis-selling complaint which you MUST make to the organisation that sold it to you. Unfortunately, your PPI was (mis) sold to you in 2000 which pre-dates regulation which began in January 2005. Unfortunately, even if DM Design Bedrooms is still trading they don't have to consider any complaint prior to 2005.
It looks as if your complaint is over.
  • What about the underwiters? A PPI policy approved that had a self-employed guy and a stay at home mum on it?

Self employment is not a guaranteed mis-sale unless the PPI would not have paid out. Most PPI did cover the self-employed.
Contacting the underwriter works only in a minority of cases. Nothing to stop you trying, however...

  • Thanks to all the information available I applied to Barclaycard and received £4360-result.
  • Last year I used Martin's form for 3 loans and a credit card with Halifax and within 6 weeks receieved a cheque for just over £1400!! It paid off some outstanding arrears and sorted Christmas!

The best thing was not giving some company 25% of it!

    Thanks Martin
