PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

Hi, I took a Visa card with Natwest in 2003, in which when asked about the PPI, I selected NO. When I started using it a couple of months later, on my first statement, I found the now dreaded PPI. I called Natwest to enquire, and they said something like: "oh, that's the PPI, you must have that, for your protection".
Dissapointed because of the now bigger charge I had to pay for the card, I thought something on the lines of: "I got conned, but what can you do!" I needed the card.
A while later, in 2004, I got a Mastercard, also from Natwest, because it had a better APR than the Visa. Again, I selected NO, but when I got the card agreement, it said: "You selected the PPI: Yes".
As Natwest had told me already that the PPI was mandatory, I didn't think much of it, signed it, and sent it back.
3 years later, and hundreds of £££ in PPI later, I got a loan with GE Money, and it also came with the PPI, but the charge description wasn't very clear, and it was something like £850 on top of £5000 so I called them. They said: "Oh, that's the PPI, but it's optional, you can take that off if you want to".
Needless to say, I froze. I cancelled the PPI with GE Money, and immediately called Natwest asking why I was told the PPI was mandatory when it wasn't, and that I wanted it stopped there and then. They did, again, claiming that it was there for my protection. Again I though, I got conned, and they took quite a bit of money from me.
And about a year later, the moneysavingexpert.com website publishes an article on reclaiming, so I did, and here's the real story:
1st Card, Visa. After my 1st letter, they wrote back, saying the PPI was correct, that I had bought it who knows when, but as a good will gesture, they were reimbursing me the last 12 months, which was something like £23.02
I followed Martin's advise, wrote back, until I got a final answer, and went to the FOS, and after 5 months of letters coming and going, the FOS Advisor gave me a phone call to clarify a couple of things, and ruled in my favour, £336.33 + 8% interest on top, £78.67, total £415.:T
2nd Card, Mastercard. On this one, Natwest was much more firm, as the agreement shows "cover selected". the FOS took a shorter time in rejecting it, and refused to accept the previous ruling (The Visa claim) as the context in which the "cover selected" wasn't challenged.
I'm planning to take them to the Small Claims Court, and see what happens.
Sorry for the long story, but I thought the whole thing together makes more sense than on their own0 -

Welcome completely ignored the first letter we sent, acknowledged the second saying they were investigating, and we received the offer on the last day of the deadline.
That's about £3500 knocked off the amount he owes :beer::beer:
We just need to reclaim all the £10 charges they have added for sending letters that say, "please call us"!
Thank you Martin :money: :T:T:T:T
I've been looking for a thread like yours for ages!! A success from Welcome Finance. I sent them the first letter and heard absolutely nothing back at all. After searching these threads for a success I assumed it was a no go for Welcome, now I will send them a second letter and see how I get on!
Congratulations!! :T2014 Challenge...

We did the same, nobody seemed to have any luck from Welcome. Make sure you send the letter to the Head Office and send it recorded delivery (we faxed it as well). We copied the letter to the branch with the monthly payment cheque. That way they couldn't say they didn't have it as they banked the money!

Vora I'm so pleased for you. It's really good to hear that someone has had s success with HSBC. I have been dealing with them over a couple of issues since Nov. and I'm getting nowhere, just losing heart with it all. Just one question how long did it take to be sorted through the FSO?
Really great news, well done to you.0 -
Hi all,
I'm a newbie but have been a fan of this site for a while- just reporting a LLoyds tsb success. After two letters, I've received an offer of £568.32 plus interest on a loan taken out in 2003 and settled last year. I'm thrilled and would like to thank all on this site for giving us the info needed to claim back whats ours! And in my case, all for the price of two first class stamps! Only sent 2nd letter last Saturday and received offer this morning- have posted acceptance form and now am just waiting to see it appear in my account! Currently awaiting 4 more decisions- good luck to all!0 -
This has happend to me also with First Plus, I really need to send off those letters, any chance you could post the content of the letter so I can get an idea of what was written.0
