PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

Hello
I just need a quick bit of advice - I am looking at making a PPI claim for an mortgage and income protection policy that I didn't know I had. It was sold as part of a mortgage in 2007 with the provider being Assurant Insurance although it was sold through a mortgage broker that have since been liquidated.
Can anyone tell me whether I should put in a PPI claim against Assurant in which case I will use the usual FOS paperwork or is it against the broker in which case I will need to get in touch with Financial Services Compensation Scheme?
Any information would be helpful as I would want to get the claim correct?

Just wanted to say how good RBS have been with 2 ppi claims we put in. My wife and I are self employed and have been for 15 years and I have a pre existing condition (MS)
Just before Christmas RBS paid up in full within weeks of my claim. Total was just under £3000 and £1700 of it was used to pay off my card. It was RBS who told me to claim to be honest when we were having problems paying for the card and they put me through to the ppi department and all it took was a 5 minute call!!!
Then we realised that my wife had a card which we had finished paying off some months ago. We had kept all the statements which showed ppi going out over 100 months and sent copies of all of them to RBS . Again we spoke to RBS on the phone rather than use a claims company. Now just 6 weeks later they have paid out over £5500.
We have a claim in now with Barclaycard, they seem a bit less helpful but will see how it goes.
What Im saying here is dont use the claims company. Its a waste of time. Most banks and card companies now have departments waiting for you to make the call. The claims companies might of had a monopoly when all this started but save yourself a packet and go it alone, If we can do it anyone can0 -

In any PPI mis-selling complaint, you must complain to the seller.0 -

Thanks to Martins Money website I have now reclaimed 3 times and I am about to do my fourth! Every time I have rang and dealt with it myself rather than going through a company who will charge! My first was with Argos were I received about £700 which paid off my balance and a cheque was sent for the difference. Then last year I rang Santander to reclaim back my PPI, I received a cheque for about £3,000 which bought my partners car! Then this year I reclaimed back my PPI on an old loan I had with Royal Bank of Scotland and received £3,700! They were really quick in processing my claim so I can't fault them at all, thanks again Martin! :j0

Thanks to MSE for giving the advice on how to claim back PPI without going through an agent. I filled in the simple forms myself after following the pointers on this website and have just received £5231 from Santander. Took about 10 weeks from start to finish but brilliant result.
Thanks again!:j0 -
Nearly two years of being messed around from barclaycard.
rejected all the way along,no proof given to me why they rejected me,other than normal "right training given", "would have been informed of ppi being optional".
Went to fos over 8 months ago, FOS got no proof off barclaycard either in that time,so claim went in my favour, gave them til 13th feb(and an extra 3 weeks on top of that) to say why rejected me/or make offer..............i rang fos today to see if barclaycard had made me any offer to be told they had rejected my claim due to it being a postal application, and that i'd ticked the box.
NOT TRUE........ i did it in branch.
in 1996 when i took out the credit card i did all my loans, cards, insurance, bank stuff inside "IN BRANCH" as always wanted a face to face way to do things. i didnt trust doing it by post, and didnt have a phone at that time.
why not inform me over the past two years with this "proof" ,seems very strange that at the very last few days that they have to make me a cash offer for my claim, this "proof" comes to light.
i think they have made a FAKE COPY of a postal claim using my signature off my ppi claim form.
i will know if they have when i see a copy of it,as my signature from 1996 is nothing like how i sign my signature now.
Is it just me,or does this smell really like barclaycard finding another way not to pay out????????????????.
ANY help or advice would be gratefully received0 -
Judging from your other posts, it's been a year, not two, so the FOS have been quite quick really, as you referrred it in June/July last year.
If it has been investigated [ and this is not their response to the FOS asking them if they would like to make an offer before it is investigated ] and your complaint has not been upheld your next step would be to refer it to an actual ombudsman or to have it investigated.
You've already been told that your complaint is quite weak, and with this postal application, it means you missbought rather than were missold. If it isn't true, you can dispute this.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -

Hello,
Just wanted to let you know that after reading Martins advice i contacted Tesco Credit Card and spoke to a lovely gentleman who took all my details.
I received a letter telling me a decision would be made in eight weeks. Well within seven weeks I got a letter to say Tesco could not confirm whether the PPI had been knowingly mis-sold so were refunding back my payments with 8% interest.
£1546 will be paid into my bank within seven days.:T
The best five miniute phone call i have ever made !!!0
