Send a SAR and £10 to see what they still hold. but as has already been said, there won't be a record if you paid the loans off early for example.

This is why you should have done this to start with.

I'm guessing it won't hurt me to ask the question at branch.
They won't be able or willing to tell you.

Do I have any rights of access to the records that they hold about me; or they could just refuse (even on the grounds that it's too much effort)?
In line with FSA guidelines, banks typically keep records for six years.
You can write a Subject Access Request (SAR) letter which will provide you with all details they hold on you for at least those six years and (sometimes) more. This will cost you £10 and they have forty days to respond. This is normally performed PRIOR to complaint for obvious reasons.

    There is an excellent SAR template here;

I think your time would be more profitably used accepting their goodwill offer. Other posters suspecting the Bank of holding more information have almost universally found in the negative.

    Your call.

Great feedback and advice. Many thanks for your efforts and enlightenment. I'm particularly feeling better about just accepting the offer, based on your comment that others have seldom (if ever) found anything useful in hunting further.

My time IS best spent on other things, and money in the hand vs a long diatribe that could glean me nothing but frustration is probably the best call.

I'm not destitute by any means, and £2,400 is a reasonable enough bit of a windfall given that I didn't hold much hope of receiving ANYTHING; given the passage of time involved.

More interest over the time would have been nice; but let's face it - if the bank didn't take it off me when they did, I would have just squandered it on something that would have earnt me diddly-squat.

    :-)

Just thought I'd let everyone know that after I had claimed back my Card Protection Insurance which I had been paying on my account and was sucessful for £1800, I decided to sort my husband's PPI claim against Lloyds TSB and his was upheld for £13,200. This was nothing like he was expecting. I also have now had a my redress for PPI on 7 consolidated loans since 2007 which was mis sold as I already had separate insurance at the time and that the salesperson told me that I would not get the loan unless I accepted the PPI payments. The investigation I did into my loans led me to gaining information from HSBC about my credit card which I had consolidated into the loan that I have now ( which hasn't got PPI on it). HSBC have confirmed that I have been paying PPI on this credit card since 1998. I have now put in a claim for mis selling PPI on this credit card, as I didn't even know I had PPI on it and I only found out this when HSBC did their full investigation into all of my accounts. I have only sent this off in the last few days so I have a bit of a wait to hear about this. I did have a another credit card with Natwest which I paid off in 2010. The only information I have on it is old minimum payment letters which indicates my credit card number, however I have no idea whether I paid PPI or not. So my next course of action is to write to Natwest requesting my terms and conditions. Should this then indicate I have been paying PPI on this card too, I will be claiming mis selling.

I would just like to say thank you to Martin's site and to all the people who give advice and reassure us and it is not right for these banks to take our money away from us. I can honestly say that I probably wouldn't have even bothered if they hadn't of made it look so easy.

I will update if I have any further luck with these claims.
    Thanks again!
  • I partly used the experiences of those on here to convince myself to go for it and today accepted an offer for over 6k.

In my case I genuinely felt annoyed with my provider 1. because i was pushed into taking out ppi or 'you won't get the loan' and 2. when it came to claiming after i lost my job, i was told it didn't apply and i should have been told that.

I had no paperwork due to a house move and aside from the 10 page thingy from the FOS and a couple of other bits, that's all I needed.

    Cheers.

Just a quick query. On the calc sheet it has the amount of tax deducted then the offer after tax. Do I get the amount with the tax included so I have to pay the tax to HMRC or do my bank pay the tax?

    Cheers.
  • I've spent the last few weeks learning as much about this as I can from this forum and had my first success today when Egg offered £6798.00. The only question is whether it relates to my former loan or credit card as I mentioned both on the questionnaire. The letter only refers to one account number. I had zero paperwork and even less recollection of the circumstances when taking out the loan or credit card, apart from the fact that every employer I've worked for had 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay after that if long term sick. Time taken from posting letter to offer of payment - 8 days! I only hope the cheque arrives as quickly. Now awaiting a response from HSBC on several personal loans from 2002 and 2005.

I'm also waiting to hear from Cardiff Pinacle about 2 loans with GE which had front loaded PPI but where both sellers, St Helens Glass and a broker called CMC are no longer trading. GE have denied any responsibility arguing they did not sell the policy, a position which appears to be supported by the responses I've read here, hence my turning to the underwriters. I still feel GE have been remiss in accepting and charging interest on a front loaded policy even if it was not sold by them directly.

Will update as and when I hear but for now, many many thanks to all who contribute to this most excellent site.
  • good morning all , i have sent a message via hsbc banking page and asked if they were going to check everybodys old accounts for mis selling ppi, well it has taken them a week to reply i have been told that my request has been sent to the correct department and it will take a few weeks to look into it! i was only asking!! any how i am thinking of reclaiming as i have always had full sick pay and life cover with my job, has anybody been contacted by hsbc without claiming?
