PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

I have to say I was flabbergasted when I opened my mail yesterday.
I used a template from the telegraph and thought I would give it a go.
I've had a mortgage with NatWest for 12 years and was a little nervous about making a claim whilst I still need it. I have an offset account and basically whilst I still have a mortgage I have enough savings to offset this - so in reality no mortgage.
So I felt I didn't care if they started to get funny and sent a letter since everyone else seemed to be doing so!
RBS' offer was £5,191 (and I didn't have to lift a finger)- I couldn't believe it I thought between £2-£3k would be great and half expected them to perhaps say no joy but here's a couple of quid to shut you up.
:j :j :j0 -
What were you reclaiming: (eg. loan, credit card, store card)
PPI on store/ credit card
Who was the provider: (e.g. Capital One, NatWest)
Marks & Spencer's
How much did you get back:
Over £13,000! :j
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman:
M&S accepted fault without a quibble, so one letter did the trick.
And then write your brief reclaim tale
I've had a M&S store card/credit card for over 25 years, the balance has gone up and down over the years (though sadly mostly up) and I always paid PPI. I would have had to tick a box on the application form if I did NOT want it (now illegal), and I didn't tick it. There was no advice regarding the fact I didn't really need it as I was in secure employment, good sick pay and redundancy arrangements etc, and i didn't know I could cancel it.
I'd heard and ignored all the advert about PPI, and slammed the phone down on numerous phone calls telling me I could claim. But one night I talked to the PPI caller who asked me 3 questions, got very excited and told me I had a claim, and for a fee of 30% they would get my money back.
At that point I did some investigating on the net, and found MSE and all it's wonderful advice. The templates looked so simple, so I decided to give it a go. It took a couple of hours to complete the template and compose a letter, but I'm so glad I did. Six weeks later I am in the position of being debt free, with money left over for a rainy day.
My advice to anyone havering over claiming is JUST DO IT! And do it yourself! Use MSE's templates and don't waste money by getting some company to do for you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you MSE, you have changed my life.0 -
Hi all, Just after a bit of advice.
I have just received a letter from Barclaycard offering £1323 PPI refund. Great - Or so I thought....they go on to say in the letter that they are going to take the money and use it to reduce the amount outstanding on a different credit card that I still have open with them. The card that had the PPI on it was paid off in 2009. The complication being that we are on a DMP and are in arrears of £89.00 on the card account they are wanting to use the PPI refund for.
I presume they can do this, but my arguement would be that, that £1323 is money that they shouldnt have taken off us and surely we should be able to decide what we do with our money?? Do you think its worth ringing them or should we just accept that at least it doing some good in reducing our debt?0 -

You can ask if they would send it to you [ they may send the interest anyway] but the chances are fairly slim.
Like you said, it's doing some good reducing your debtNon me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -

gangnamstyler wrote: »I was very disappointed yesterday to receive a letter from MBNA rejecting a claim for a cr card I took out in 2001, PPI was applied and hefty amounts taken out over a period of about 3 years.
Basically they are saying as I applied online, I was directed to a different screen for the PPI and I ticked the box to purchase the PPI and given this, they "are satisfied that I actively chose to purchase PPI and understood that it was optional when I did so".
They also said I was elegible for the cover being a uk citizen and employed etc and they did not offer advice only information "in other words your's was a non-advised sale". They also say that I had sufficient info to make my own evaluation and will not be upholding my complaint.
Well to me all this is a very weak argument, how do I know what box I did or did not tick in 2001 and they did not provide evidence of this. I also dont know if it was something I was strongly advised to do or possibly had to "untick" a box to remove the PPI from the application as a lot of web sites are clever about these days. Anyway long story short, I'm unhappy and I dont know what to do next. I also note from this forum that other people have had their claims upheld in similar circumstances so why have I been rejected? Anyone else receive a similar letter from MBNA or other and what should I do now, write back to them or go straight to FOS? any advice will be much appreciated.
Hi briefly my situation is pretty much the same - I have now passed my complaint over to the FOS as I had (have) adequate NHS cover should I get sick.
With the MBNA rejection letter I received a copy of the form I filled out and signed in 2001 where it clearly stated they recommend I take out the cover. On the application form I had mentioned I worked for the NHS 3 times -
Where I accept it was not an advisory sale, I couldn't find any clear information to help me make an informed decsion about whether or not I needed the PPI at that time.
I also rang MBNA after their rejection letter to ask if I could have actually claimed if I had of needed to since I had NHS benefits - I was told no! ( Call was recorded)!
I am in the 5th month now of waiting with FOS and recently had an email to say they are looking at my case now.
I am keeping everything crossed and trying to stay optimistic xx
Good luck with your case:)0 -
I received a letter from First Plus at the beginning of October advising that they may of mis-sold me PPI. I completed their on-line questionnaire and waited for the rejection letter to come.
How wrong I was - they replied within 3 weeks upholding me complaint and offering a full refund of all payments along with 8% interest and restating the loan as if the PPI wasn't taken.
In summary they have repaid a total of £5228 and my loan balance has been reduce by just over 7k.
Cheques were received just 6 weeks after receiving the original letter from First Plus.
Originally I was wary of trying to claim the PPI back from First Plus in case they called the loan in, but after receiving their letter I thought why not give it a go - so glad I did - happy days now.
If anyone is thinking about reclaiming from First Plus I would encourage you to do it.

Hi
After being with the FOS for over 2 years.
The FOS agreed my complaint a credit card and Flexi Loan should be upheld.
I received a letter friday giving me a figure for the credit card but no mention of the flexi loan..
Does anyone know if HSBC deal with each one separate as all there letters up the involvement of FOS referred to both. Im wary about sending it back incase they say its for both depsite there being only a reference to the credit card PPI.
I have tried to call but due to the account being closed since 2005 they can not give me any details..
Any help appreicated0
