I have been in the process of reclaiming PPI for a Debenhams account I opened in 1994 when I was a student. The provider was GE Money and I actually closed the account in 2005.
I have just received a refund, interest and a goodwill payment to a total of over £6,000.
I did not have to go to the FLA (not the ombudsman here) however I did have to prove how many hours I was working by going to HMRC and providing a record of my National Insurance contributions for the year I opened the account.
My advive is simple - PERSIST, PERSIST, PERSIST. I had both the time and the inclination to do this, bearing in mind I started the claim in February of this year. Don't be put off, spend a tenner getting your records back, spend £1.08 to send your letters recorded delivery and if you know you are due the money back, don't be put off by the company you are claiming from.
Hi
Big congratulations on the pay out :-) I am in the process of dealing with GE money and have just sent them evidence from my old university to prove that I was in fact a fulltime student. I called them and asked woul thi be sufficent and they said yes - do you think they may ask me to get a hold of national insurance contributions? also cheeky I know but how much did they award you as "goodwill"? I am getting my little hopes up........:j
L xxxxDFD - April 2011 - come on!!:T0 -
after a year of being with the FOS gone through 2 adjudicators and then finally an ombudsman
we received a cheque for 10556.42
all I can say is dont give up and a big big thank for the services of the FINANCIAL OMBUDSMAN SERVICE AND IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING MARTIN AND EVERYONE ON HERE.
LOL
LAINI XX:j :j :j
Oh that is excellent news Laini  -at last!
I'm still waiting for Halifax to get their fingers out and restructure my loans without the PPI, putting me in the position I'd have been in if it hadn't been applied
The letter confirming a refund of premiums paid dropped through my door 16 weeks ago - and Halifax are ignoring mine and the FOS' requests to sort it out fully.
If my maths is right, removing the PPI completely will pay off the loan and give me a few quid - makes a change for them to be owing me money :rotfl:LBM November 2005: approx £32K :eek:Current debt: approx £12K :TGetting there one day at a time0 -
Hello, just wondered if any of you have had this with you reclaiming and what happens? we've been told that they have lost everything to do with our loan etc... and they will uphold it and will be written off.
We finished paying it last year £10,000 (over 2years) not inc the interest. have asked in the ppi dicussion but no one has had this just seen someone on BBC panorama with this. just wondered how much you got back from them. any info would be great.
Thanks Kelly:male: 2 Beautiful Boys :male::beer: Not uptomyeyes anymore thanx MSE & friends for all your help:beer:0 -

What were you reclaiming: Loan PPI
Who was the provider: HSBC and Abbey
How much did you get back: £2,800 from HSBC, £871 from Abbey
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: One letter on both occasions
HSBC: Claimed on a graduate loan I took out in 2003 as I was only on a six-month contract at the time (not permanent), sowould not have been able to claim if my contract wasn't renewed. I was also told my 'application would not be taken seriously' if I wasn't prepared to take the PPI and was not made aware I could go elsewhere to buy the insurance. I sent the template letter on this website in early October and got a reply on Saturday saying they were upholding my complaint! I put in a few phone calls as well, just to check up on my complaint's process, as I didn't get a letter after four weeks, as promised. This seemed to help speed things along.
Abbey: First of two PPI cases successfully claimed. Second PPI should be refunded soon as I got the loan in the same circumstances as above. Also only took one letter, sent at the same time. Abbey responded with a questionnaire for me to fill in, asking questions about my employment status at the time, what my salary was, whether I had children, etc. I sent it back untouched, saying I failed to see why I should repeat answers to questions they either should already know, or deemed unimportant at the time. But Abbey claimed they didn't receive this response, so I faxed it, but they didn't receive that either. I was planning to give them an earfull today, but got the response saying I was successful over the weekend!
I know I'm reiterating what several people have already said, but it really does (in most cases) only take on letter. Thanks to this website, if my third claim is successful, I will have successfully claimes a total of around £6,500. Enough to clear my credit card and overdraft and go travelling! Thanks to everyone else who left comments and helped me along the way.

After a very long process, I have finally achieved success with First Plus via the FOS. They have taken off the PPI from the loan inc interest totalling over 17K and refunded me all payments made with 8% interest. I had 2 cheques back totalling 3.9K and my loan has been reset up as if I never had PPI in the first place. Its take 12 months but has been well worth it and my payments have gone down by £125 pm too! Hopefully they'll also reflect the 1.5% base rate reduction recently when they next review their rates.
Thanks to everyone who helped me directly or indirectly with their forum posts - especially the main man SIR MARTIN LEWIS for bringing it to our attention.
Hope others have the same success.0 -
