I picked debit last time I was asked and it worked
  • I used my Supercard in Budapest over the last two weeks and it worked perfectly every time in ATMs, shops and restaurants with a great exchange rate, the transactions all appeared on the app and when I got home they were in the pending in my Lloyds account.
Since then each one has disappeared from the Lloyds pending and have not been deducted. I've never known this before with a transaction in my Lloyds account.
So I seem to have experienced the opposite of many of the posters on the forum!
I did wonder if Lloyds had identified them as fraudulent and put them on hold because all the transactions had the same description and I had withdrawn very similar amounts each time but they haven't contacted me.
Having read the posts on the forum I am quite concerned about how this is all working. I did expect some teething problems tbh though.

This has also happened to me (barclaycard), but in the end the transaction re-appears so i wouldn't get too worried.

I used my Supercard at Manila airport four weeks ago because I wanted to withdraw cash from a cashmachine.

On the first attempt I typed in my PIN and the amount I wanted to withdrawal. The machine responded "WRONG PIN" and didn't dispense any money.

I used the Supercard app to check my PIN and attempted the withdrawal again. Once again the machine responded with "WRONG PIN" and didn't give me any money. :(

Both transactions appeared in the Supercard app, suggesting they went through, but dropped off after a few weeks. I contacted Supercard about it, but their front-line staff only offered advice about how to retrieve my PIN.

This incident has put me off the Supercard a bit, especially as I already have Halifax Clarity and N&P cards.

Also, I was asked "Is it a credit card" when I proffered my Clarity card at a supermarket here recently. "Yes" I replied. However, what should I have replied if I was asked what the Supercard is?

I think as far as processing is concerned, internationally Visa is Visa and Mastercard is Mastercard and it doesn't matter whether the card is a debit or credit card.

Paying by card is often a convoluted process here. In this instance the shop assistant took the card, accessed a different application on the till, typed the total in then offered me the Chip'n'PIN machine. After the PIN was entered the till spat THREE receipts out and an authorisation code. The shop assistant then typed that code in to another application on the till. Then I was asked to sign two or the receipts just below where it said "No signature required". :rotfl:

It still surprises me how many large European supermarkets are still using separate card machines at the tills. Given how easier it is to make computer programs talk to each other these days (I'm a programmer), it puzzles me why they buy/rent all this extra equipment, install extra cables, have to type the amount in twice, print extra receipts, etc etc!
  • Used my travelex card in Mallorca to hire some transport. The hirer took a deposit as security and off I went. On return I presented my card and the refund was made. Travelex keep telling me that one refund is waiting to hit my linked account and the other just hasn't materialised yet. I'm still waiting and very unhappy with them hanging on to my cash (£800). Does anyone know the mechanism to make a complaint? Seems thisIis how the free card earns money.:(:money:

I'm near sure it says in the terms and conditions it shouldn't be used as pre authorisation which your you transaction would have been.

On a 'normal' card it can take up to ten days for a pre auth to be returned

How is the card user supposed to know if the clerk is simply pre-authorising or actually taking a deposit? Especially in a another country in a another language.

Similar to some hotel and petrol station attendants charging the card in GBP rather the local currency. If they go ahead and do it without your permission (which some do) there is little you can do as the transaction has been made.

You look at the screen before you put your PIN number in, it will say whether it's GBP or Local currency, as for whether they are charging the card or pre authorisation i wouldn't be approving the transaction unless I knew, I may be wrong but doesn't it say on the screen pre auth? car hire is usually pre authorisation is it not rather than actually charging and refunding?

    Nope you're wrong.

At least in the instances I came across in Spain. I found that unlike UK terminals, some of the terminals in Spain often asked for a pin without the amount being shown on the pin entry screen.
