What a stupid point to make, how can people on here think it's OK for a car dealer to increase the price of a car and con someone out of an appreciable amount of money.
Who's being "conned" out of anything?

The dealer and the OP agreed £7.100 plus the old car for the new car.
They're paying £7,100 plus the old car, and getting the new car.

What is this mysterious "appreciable amount of money"? How much is being paid extra over what was agreed?

The advertised price of the car was £9475 + Road tax and originally agreed on £3000 for the trade in. The dealer charged him £9875 + Road Tax and £3000 for the trade in also minus the further bit of haggling.

It's the same as doing your shopping in a supermarket and finding 10 pence has been added to every item. You could argue there that you agreed to pay if you didn't notice until you got home.
  • The OP agreed to paying £7100 plus their old car as trade in. They seemed to be happy with that. The garage have agreed to accept £7100 plus the OP' trade in. If the OP was happy with that deal, what are they complaining about?

Because they are not happy being conned, it's as simple as that.
  • They were not conned though!!! They agreed terms with the dealer. They agreed the price their part ex was valued at and they agreed the balance payable. If they weren't happy with the way the figures were arrived at, that is their own fault given that they openly state in their own post that they did not check the calculations prior to agreeing to the deal.

What idiot goes and buys a car valued at close to £10k without checking the calculations? More fool them.

They were happy with the exchange price, which was £7100 plus their car.

Maybe they should have questioned it before signing, the only way they've been conned is if they weren't shown the figures before signing.
  • RS2000, some people don't seem to get this.

If I saw a car for sale at £10,000 for example and lets say I got £1000 discount on it, I wouldn't mind if the calculations were as follows:

    New Vehicle Price £9000
    Part Ex £3000
    Balance to Pay £6000

Similarly, if the breakdown is as follows, I wouldn't mind either:

    New Vehicle Price £8000
    Paint Protection £500
    Tire Shine £400
    Air Freshener £100
    Total £9000
    Part Ex £3000
    Balance to Pay £6000

Why would I not mind? BECAUSE THE PART EX VALUATION AND COST TO CHANGE ARE THE SAME!

This is the bit I can't quite understand...

"The car's £9,500 - plus the price of the tax - and we'll take £3,000 off for your old car, so that's £7,220"

Hold on one minute... Does it really require much "calculation" to see that that suggests the price of the tax is nearly £750...?

    Yet the conversation then went...
"Oooh, call it £7,000, we've got a deal."
    "Hmm. I can do £7,100."

I bet the salesperson would goo in their pants if they can sell you paint sealant and tyre black at those rates.
  • How about the air freshener at £100?? :)

It was just an illustration. Personally, if I can arrive at a deal with which I'm happy with, I don't care how the dealer dresses it up on the invoice.
