As the empty train was on the opposite platform, the woman might have been unable to manage the stairs or risk waiting for a possibly slow lift.

It's not long to get across to another platform.

The OP states that it's at a tube terminus so the platform is central and shared with platform 1 on one side and 2 on the other, there would I no need to take further stairs.

How do you know they weren't connecting train stations? Most weeks I go to Newton Abbot which is rather small. If you want to go to Torquay or Paignton, you've got to change there. I live in Plymouth and unless you've caught a train going to Penzance, you've got to change there to go anywhere in Cornwall.

It was on the tube, the tube map on the wall shows if the station connects with another line or British Rail services.

No first class on trains on C-2-C line into Fenchurch Street, nor is there 1st class on tubes - which is what I thought OP was talking about.

On trains into Liverpool St, 1st class is the first three carriages as you go through the barriers - 1st class passengers carry too much cash to walk any further :-D

Seasoned commuters on the tube know exactly where they need to be standing for the exit or the tunnel to change at whichever station they get off/change at. I prefer to walk along and have some space but one of the lifts at the station I go to has been out of order for months so I know, no just which carriage but which door I have to alight by to be first in line for the working lift :rotfl:

My own particular bugbear is people that jump the queue by entering the lift from the exit side when there are easily a hundred people queueing on the entrance side

Another possibility is that the woman was catching a bus -amongst a million other things.

The woman did ask someone to get up. .

So this woman asked someone (not you) to give up their seat .....and you then went around asking all the people at work and also started a thread to ask if you should have given up your seat to a pregnant woman ................who obviously had no need for your seat as someone else gave her theirs.

OP I really think you need to get a life !!!!

    There's over-thinking a situation......and then there is the OP :)

I've been told many times that London has an 'uncaring' culture but having lived her my entire life, I know no different.

I would happily give up my seat for an elderly or disabled person. With a pregnant woman though, I wouldn't voluntarily offer my seat. If I was asked directly then I would begrudgingly oblige. Pregnancy is (mostly, I hope) a choice and to expect (and feel entitled) others to accomodate that choice is, in my opinion, rather selfish.

So pregnancy is a choice, therefore you would stay sitting on your behind while a pregnant lady stood in front you? Honestly? What a selfish, self centered person you sound.

Honestly it amazes me that there is even a thread about this. The answer is of course you should stand, for a pregnant woman or any man, woman or child who looks like they need a seat, be they 7 or 107. Its called MANNERS, which is basically about being nice, kind and helpful.

In my opinion, those that lack manners lack basic human kindness.

Yep, but that wouldn't be specifically connecting at a certain time like a train would so arriving 5 minutes later would make no difference, there'd either be none or three there whatever time she arrived :rotfl:

    This.

Shocking that some people live their lifes in such a me me me bubble.

You can justify your actions by giving all the excuses you want, but here's a suggestion - next time when you are sitting on your young, healthy bum and see someone who needs the seat, why don't you jump up and offer it to them?

You never know, you might actually feel good about yourself. You may also find out that karma has a funny way of rewarding decent people.......and teaching a lesson to the terminally self absorbed! :T

I'm not sure who the quote by JWM was directed to but as far as the OP is concerned, he/she doesn't appear to have that healthy a bum, however young:

EDIT: I should also point out that it causes me pain to stand for a prolonged period as I have problems in my knees and because I look young you wouldn't know it but I do generally give up my seat for people who need it.
