If it were me I'd buy/make 25 burgers and 25 sausages and 25 burger buns and 20 hot dog bugs.

Make vegetable skewers (onion quarters, bits of pepper, bits of mushroom)

Ask vegetarian guests to bring what they might like to cook (eg, quorn, veggie burgers or sausages) or ask in advance so you can get some in for them.

Do a plate of cooked bacon (cook earlier in day)
a big bowl of grated cheese,
a bowl of cheap ketchup or burger relish with spoon,
a bowl of caramelised onions (part 2 of this recipe)
    a bowl of coleslaw (recipe),
a big bowl of salad - with lettuce, tomato and cucumber, spring onion
A big bowl of oven marinated chicken wings (just buy dead cheap BBQ sauce, pour over wings, cook in oven for maybe 25 mins, turning once)

For dessert I'd probably buy a cheesecake and a chocolate cake unless I had a bit of help preparing in which case I'd probably make 30 cupcakes as they don't need plates. And icelollies if you have room in your freezer.

Aim to cook about 15 burgers & sausages, you can always freeze any you don't cook.

During the week go shopping for everything (apart from the bread). Make sticky onions, grate all the cheese. Clean outside furniture.
Day before - sort out all your plates (paper?), cutlery, drinks, jugs, bucket for beer
Day of - Cook all bacon, have breakfast of some :D Make salad, make skewers, cut bread in half, put BBQ on, plate up all your additional ingredients. Get dressed up. Move stuff outside with clingfilm on. Put chicken on. Sort out drinks. Get someone else to cook all the food!

MaggieBaking's idea about bowls of stuff is spot on - I would add one caveat - only put out a third or half the cheese/caramalised onions/coleslaw etc at a time. If people at the front of the queue see huge full bowls they will add to their plate accordingly, thinking there is loads for everyone - this usually ends up with those at the back scraping for bits. If you put out smaller bowls, then replenish when empty the food will go much further, and no-one goes without - and those who want can go back for seconds.

I have a kettle style barbecue with a lid.

What I have done in the past for barbecues up to 8 people is buy a joint of roasting beef from Sainsburys for a tenner, it is usually on offer.

Get the beef and put some seasoning on it. Olive oil, mustard powder, salt and pepper etc.

Put the coal over to one side of the bbq and light.

While the flames are still burning I put the joint over the flame to seal it, like you would on the pan while normally roasting beef. I then put it in a roasting tray which is placed to the side of the bbq without the coals, put the lid on and leave it to cook. I've got a Lidl meat thermometer which stays in the joint the whole time and lets me know when it is cooked to medium. Resist the temptation to take the lid off and see how it is looking.

My roasting tray has a drip grill and I throw a can of Guinness in beneath there and a few quartered onions. The fat off the meat which drips in to this makes a great gravy. Put the joint on to a plate and do slices.

To serve with the beef and gravy, I just do pickles, coleslaw and fresh bread. A bit of red wine to drink.

The combined cost of the food is maybe £15. Less than I would pay for sausages, burgers, chicken thighs except that the meat is much better quality in comparison.

If you are considering a barbecue and you have a kettle barbie with a lid then try this. I guarantee you will not regret it.

    Hi

My contribution to our street party this weekend is to buy the burger/hotdog buns for 70 people. How many would you buy of each? I don't want to run out but I don't want loads wasted either...and half and half or more burger ones do you think? (people are bringing their own meat so can't match up with what is being bought).

Also - any good deals out there at the mo?

73 reads and not one answer.

Oh alright, it was a silly question! I was just having a big dither over it. Now all I'm worried about is racing to the supermarket at the right time so they haven't sold out as I imagine there's about a million BBQs being planned for this weekend.

I think I'd work on the basis of one hotdog and one burger each. Some people will only have one and not the other, while others will have both, hopefully it will balance out. It wouldn't hurt to buy a couple of packets of each over too, just in case.

Its easier to put sausages in burger buns than burgers in hot dog buns, so I'd err on the side of more burger buns.
Its always going to be a guessing game, but the age of the attendees tends to make a difference, if you have a predominance of adult males under 30 then consumption can be double or treble that of a mixed group in their 40s and 50s. The length of time the event is going on for will also have an impact alongside any other catering options.
My best guess, would be around 180 buns and 50 ish hot dog buns.

I'd go with the one of each for each person and a couple of packs for spares.

Tesco have 12 rolls for £1 (2 packs of six on offer for £1). Not the highest quality ever but fine for a burger.

Hope it goes well and the weather is kind.
