I would make and take kebabs as they're cheap, you can make any style & flavour (ingredients & marinades) to suit your tastes, easy to cook (no worrying about half charred/half raw meat) and easy to pick up and eat. :)

We'd usually take enough to share, expecting to share what other people brought too - only exceptions being those with dietary restrictions (e.g. veggie, vegan, allergies etc) who bring & eat their own to make sure they don't go hungry!

this is very much the way BBQs work with our circle of friends too. I certainly couldn't afford to provide meat for everyone at a BBQ, and i dont expect my friends to be able to either. it's about spending time enjoying the company of those you love as far as i'm concerned, not turning up your nose because you're not getting a free meal.

we've taken the 'communal meat pot' one step further - if we end up with surplus uncooked meat, the person who will be hosting the next group bbq takes it home and freezes it to save waste.

corn on the cob is lovely done on the bbq - goes very soft and juicy.

soak wooden skewers in water for a few hours, while you get down to the butchers and buy some thick cut gammon steaks - about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick will do nicely.

Then buy some peppers, tomatoes, onions, baby sweetcorn and then chop them into bite size pieces and skewer them with the cubed gammon ( that's why it's so thick)

You could brush a bit of thin honey over them, but there isn't any need really, once on the BBQ the juices run out of the gammon and seal it up - absolutely delicious, my fave BBQ.

to pad your offering out with something cheaper get some lamb kebabs from the freezer section in Lidl, hubby says they are really nice ( I don't eat lamb, so wouldn't know)

We've been buying pork rib chops from the Co-op, marinating them in whatever we fancy, either home-made or one of the hot Nando's peri-peri sauces, then BBQ-ing them. They are not the usual pork chops, they're the same meat as the tasty ribs you get at Chinese restaurants but cut differently so you get a much bigger ratio of meat to bone & they seem to BBQ really well. They are just the right shape & size for stuffing into a warm pitta bread with a big wodge of salad.

    thanks for the replies.
I headed off to Tesco & was actually quite shocked by the price of some of the meat. I was all geared up to do some kebabs until I saw the price of the chicken! I guess everyone else will bring one of those £5 iceland packs - they are way cheaper than buying real meat <sigh>
I bought mince to make some h/m burgers & some pork steaks that I'm going to marinade - I hope that is ok!!

I thought the same about the price of meat today when I was shopping (buy far less than I used to as OH turned veggie and I feel guilty buying meat as it feels I'm saying 'this is MINE') anyway, I digress....home made burgers and marinated pork steaks sounds perfect. Don't be surprised if other people do the same - they may not all bring the '£5 iceland packs' (not sure why you think everyone will be brinigng these?) Although they are cheap, of course the offset if the quality of the meat and welfare of the animals they came from :(

Enjoy the bbq - I'd be interested to know what others did bring
