I'd imagine you check to see if food is cooked the same way as you would if it was done on the hob and you weren't sure, i.e. get the thickest/biggest/least cooked-looking bit and cut it in half, check to make sure there are no bloody or pink bits inside that shouldn't be and that it's piping hot right in the middle.
I usually temperature check sausages etc by the very unscientific method of touching the cut middle surface to my finger or tongue and it's done if I have to immediately yank the sausage away so as to not burn myself! Of course then that sausage will be mine!
If you're worried then probably best to give it a few trial runs with just the household so that you can get used to how it works and all the settings, timings etc before having a load of people round.0 -
we usually part cook things like sausages chicken etc in the oven first & then finish off on the bbq

Hi getcarter
We have a gas bbq and once you start cooking on it I doubt you'll look back! Ours is under cover so we can cook on it all year round including the winter, the meat always has a really lovely taste too it and it saves the smell and mess in the kitchen.
The only thing I don't cook on there is chicken, never had, that's not to say you can't though but I've just never trusted it to be cooked enough.
The more you use it the more you'll get to know how quickly things cook. I'd say its just the same as using your grill so sausages take about 15 - 20mins, chops about 20mins but as another poster said just slit the sausage or meat and you can see if it's cooked or not.
I also find marinating meat for a while before putting it on the bbq gives it a lovely flavour too.
Happy BBQ'ing!0 -
I am being given a gas BBQ today but am slightly worried about cooking on it. How do you make sure it is cooked through and has anyone got any foolproof receipes for using on it?
I've never used a gas barbeque, but would advise thet you make sure all food is piping hot right the way through, then it'll have killed any pathogens
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to give you more ideas as to what to cook.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
I love BBQ season. Here are some of my favourites:
If I'm feeding lots of people I'll often butterfly a leg of lamb. I marinade it overnight in olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and thyme and then stick it on for about 20 mins a side.
I'll also do tandori marinade on chicken drumsticks. I base the marinade on Madhur Jaffrey's from the BBC website
For an alterntive to chocolate in bananas add a crumbled up ginger snap, a spoonful of golden syrup and a squeeze of lemon juice. Serve with single cream...

This gorgeous weather has got me thinking about hubbys birthday bbq in july. I am putting £100 aside for everything including beer and food and wonder if anyone has any ideas to make the food go further/have different things?
I am going to get:
Burgers
Sausages
Chicken Drumsticks marinated in diffent sauces
Chicken Kebabs
What can I do for the veggies amongst us?
I am getting prepared and am going to get £25 worth of stuff each month. Obviously the buns, salad etc will be the last to get.
I am looking at about 50/60 people coming
Your ideas will be much appreciated.
Thank you xLucylema x :j0 -

Stuffed mushrooms, vegetable and herb kebabs and the normal veggie burger.
Also, I am sure you can get veggie bacon...so why not bacon and something salad with lemon and extra virgin olive oil?
Hope this helps!0 -

If you have a charcoal bbq, butternut wedges with a blob of butter, some salt and black pepper and wrapped in foil, then roasted in the coals are great.I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly
