In contrast to the earlier poster if I went to a BBQ I would expect to take wine/beer and food - but then noone I know is well off and if anyone had to 'host' (i.e. paying for everything for everyone) noone would ever invite anyone to a BBQ!
We'd usually take homemade skewers with chicken, steak etc cut into strips, marinated, then thread onto skewers - makes meat go further (a whole chicken breast might be eaten by one person, but will make 5-10 skewers...), can do veg & hallumi cheese for veggies, prawns & squid are also tasty for fish lovers. Can also use minced lamb to make up koftas on skewers - also v yum! (cross posted with above!)
We'd usually take enough to share, expecting to share what other people brought too - only exceptions being those with dietary restrictions (e.g. veggie, vegan, allergies etc) who bring & eat their own to make sure they don't go hungry!0 -
I'd also go for the kebabs - marinated cubed chicken breast, peppars, red onion, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, pineapple etc

You could be really different & stuff a whole trout. It could be wrapped in tin foil & placed on the BBQ.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0

I vote for chicken legs/wings and make your own marinade
other people tend to appreciate that as most people will bring burgers and sausages straight out of the packet.
A very easy marinade is made from cupoard ingredients: olive oil, ketchup, soy sauce, honey, lemon juice, mustard, herbs, garlic, paprika (a variety of any of the above).0 -
I am also used to taking meat when barbequeing with friends although all the meat goes into the "pot" so to speak and I wouldnt expect to eat just what I had taken.... i cant imagine hovering over the barbeque for a fillet steak while others are eating simpler food........I would make some tasty home made burgers and hope that others went along the same route.
ps. who can tell me what key I must have pressed to change the type on my computer........:huh:0 -

I often ask my guests to bring the meat. I am cooking, cleaning, hosting, providing salads side dishes and making drinks all day so I don't consider that to be cheap. Meat is very expensive, if my guests want to bring cheap manky burgers then that's fine but I can't bring myself to buy them! My in laws are used to me now, they even bring free range chicken drummers as they know I won't eat them otherwise!
As for the original question, how about kebabs? I make my own, it doesn't take a lot of effort and you could use pork or turkey which may be cheaper than chicken . Or Pork chops, pork steaks (lidl do them cheap) marinated in something tasty (will make you look fancy too!)June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

I'd go with Homemade burgers or marinated meats to turn into kebabs I think.
Some lovely recipes here and here. I've made these Kiev Beefburgers and they were yummy!"Born to shop, forced to work!"0 -
chicken or turkey, pepper, mushroom and pineapple kebabs- heavy on the veg, light on the meat ?
homemade burgers (minced beef, breadcrumbs, onion)
hot dogs
flat mushrooms with a dollop of garlic butter on
Enjoy!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
