Barbeque ideas please!

Hi,
Sorry for the loss of your Mam & Dad,but what a lovely way to remember them.
I thought I would post some of my cheapy
alternatives for you,for your BBQ
Firstly I always buy the dry sachets of chinese and barbeque marinades from tesco and put some pork chops in a freezer bag give them a shake and marinade for a few hours or overnight,they are much cheaper than already flavoured ones.
To make Garlic bread I go to farmfoods,iceland or local market and buy large white baps mix some butter or Flora in with lazy garlic and add some herbs spread over the open rolls and cook on gas 4 for about 10 mins (180c,350 f)
I like to make my own burgers as I like to know what is in them!So I mix mince with herbs,S&P and an egg to bind and then roll into burger shapes(coat in flour to stop them sticking)
I also make Trifle cos' everyone seems to like that!
Buy a value or cheapy sponge,pour over a strawberry or orange jelly,leave to set then pour over packet custard and whip up some cream when it's cool to put on the top,this needs to be made the day before but all the value range of jellies,custards work just as well.
Lastly if you can get a big plastic or glass bowl make up some knock out punch with anything you fancy and add some bits of fresh fruit to it...We have used Rose wine,Vodka and a bottle of Sangria it sounds a bit yuck but it knocks your socks off!...Sparkling white wine,vodka and Orange juice is nice as well!
Good Luck,;)

Bagsy helping with the puds only:
Bbq bananas: guests choose a banana and pre-cut bit of tin foil. lay nana in foil and then top with toppings of their choice (chocolate sauce, nuts, fudge, sprinkles, other fruit etc) wrap up again and then they get to cook it when ready. Serve with ice-cream or squirty cream.
Smores: put 3 marshmallows on a kebab stick, guests get to cook their own until they're just starting to crisp or goo. Take two smart price choccy digestives, biccy side down on the top shelf of the barbie for no longer than about 30 seconds, just enough to see the top chocolate start to melt. Scrape the marshmallows on to the biscuit (using a fork) and sandwich between the other. Copious amounts of squirty cream and chocolate sauce and munch away. Paper plates required as these are messy and you don't want a whole heap of dishes after.
Your mam and dad would be chuffed for sure that you're carrying on the tradition. Hope it's a glorious day for you all x
Both cheap, easy to do and no hassle as guests make their own.0 -
Beer can chicken is a winner:
Get a whole chicken and soak it in beer/ larger, cracked peppercorns, salt, chilli, some brown suger ( or maple syrup/ honey) worcestershire sauce and red wine vinegar.
Then when ready to cook open a can of larger /beer and drink about a quater (cooks perks) shove the can inside the chicken (breast end) until it stands up on the can and BBQ for about 2 hours..you can pour the soaking mix over it half way through.
Garlic bread :
French stick or any nice shaped loaf..make garlic butter ( garlic, butter, salt, pepper and parsley) cut the loaf into slices but not all the way through. Smear the butter on the slices and wrap in silver foil..cook on the BBQ for about 10 minutes
New Potatoes :
Take as many pots as you like but it is best to leave just one layer.Make a silver foil dish and add pots, wine or beer, salt , pepper and mint..roast for about 1 and half hours. Once cooked through add some butter and mix well.
You can make your own burgers with just mince and onion, garlic, chilli etc and sweetcorn of course is brillant.
You can also do bananas split open with some maple syrup or honey.
You could also do a meat loaf or nut roast
Chicken thighs in cajun spice ( corriander, garlic, chilli,cumin, salt, pepper etc)
If you have a frying plate you can always make corn bread or sweetcorn fritters or onion pattiesThere is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

Not wanting to piggy back your thread Smamfer, I'm catering for about the same number soon and like you on limited budget.
If someone was doing 'portion' control for about 30 - what would you recommend as allowance food and drinks' wise - I dont' want to be stingy so over rahter than under.0 -
Depends on your guests to be honest..My loving kith and kin would need about a bottle of wine each plus beer etc
But you should allow I would think 2 to 3 glasses of wine per person..4 or 5 cans of larger/ beer per person..same for non alcoholic drinks
I would do a massive potato salad and coleslaw..you could always do an amercian pot luck and ask people to bring a plate ( of food) it does get people talking and can help split the cost)
corn bread is dirt cheap so look into that but really it depends on the tastes of your guests..if you give me some idea of what you like I can see what I can come up with.
Dips and things are also a great saving as they make basic food go further.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

I hope you've got a large bbq if you are cooking for 30, you might be better pre-cooking the majority of the food and just finishing it off on the bbq.0
