I've just had a look at a box of Herbatint colour and thought I'd report back!

I've been using it for the last couple of years, as I'd heard about the research on hair dye being linked to cancer, particularly if you're using dark dyes. It provides good 100% coverage and is quite a "natural" colour too.

The box says that its an organic herbal colour with no ammonia but does contain diaminobenzenes. If you look at their website, they say that far fewer of the diaminobenzenes (the carcinogenic stuff) go into your system if ammonia isn't used to fix the colour.

    The website address is www.herbatint.co.uk

Think it costs about £7.00-ish a box but getting hold of it isn't that easy. It seems to be sold through independent chemists (there's a list on the website), hairdressers or stores like Selfridges.

You can order it over the internet but make sure that you're actually getting stuff that is normally sold in the UK. The last batch I bought was made in Italy (which I don't think it previously had been) and there was no applicator or plastic gloves! You would not believe the mess - both me and the bathroom were golden chestnut in the end! I think the website I used had imported it for sale in the UK. It didn't seem as conditioning as it had done before either. Oh well, saved myself a few pence!

They are on the herbsgardens and health website along with naturtint and also in every health food shop where i live but I used Naturtint and it covers grey probably very similar. The website I mention explains about the chemical elements.

I'm about 30% grey with dark brown hair, and though I'm prepared to go grey gracefully, I don't plan to do that until I'm at least 40!!

I've been saying that for about 4 years now but unfortunately my times up:eek:

I'm 40 on Sunday!  I'm not sure how grey I am as I dye it every 5 weeks or so. premature white hair runs in mums family and she has a beautiful head of pure white hair but like you I'm not ready for that yet!;)

I have dark brown hair. I dont mind grey hair (as long as its a nice shade of grey) but i hate it when your neither one shade or another.

I have been using this hair colour for some years. It does not contain peroxide or ammonia and it does NOT smell awful like some I used before.

There is a list of ingredients (sent with order) but I am not sure whether any of them are carcinogenic. It does say that the product contains phenyldiamines.

I usually buy 3 at a time and, with postage, this costs £22.35. The service is absolutely excellent. If you don't need an applicator bottle with subsequent orders, then they leave them out on request.
  • Don't forget that you can always go to the Toni & Guy or Vidal Sasoon hair academies for very good cheap hair cuts & Colour. I have been using Toni & Guy hair academy in London for years now with no problems. They are not technically students as some of them are doing refresher courses, or if they are students then they are doing their final examinations, and all treatments are fully supervised by tutors etc.

They charge £5 for hair cut and £20 for full head of highlights or bleach.

I'm sure there are other academies in other parts of the UK but not sure.

There is something similar in Birmingham - At the College of Food and Leisure they offer very cheap haircuts, massages, pedicures, facials etc - they are all students but they are very closely monitored by professionals so they cant go wrong. after you are done being pampered you can also use the restaurant there and again the food is prepared and cooked by the students and so is very inexpensive!
  • wehavethepower, do you book in advance and do you know if they do mens hair?

    thanks
  • My hair is dark blonde (although boosed by highlights now and again), but I've been thinking more and more about going brunette and my husband thinks I should give it a go.

Do you think I should be daring and do it from a box colour or shell out and go to a hairdressers?

    Any advice/experiences welcomed!
  • Hairdressers - especially if you have previously highlighted sections of hair.
I have had my hair all colours, white blonde, purple, bright red - and khaki!
That was the time I put dark brown over blonde with DIY hair kit. Not very fetching.
They will also be able to assess the condition of your hair and use an appropriate dye. Some have more peroxide than others, so this again could give you an entirely unexpected result :o
