This kind of thing for instance. I typed in silver shampoo in ebay, and quite a few items came up.

Hope someone can help. I am in my late 40's and I have always had really dark hair. I started using semi permanant colours in my 30's when I noticed the "natural highlights" appearing, then moved to permanant colours when the stubborn little bu**ers wouldnt be covered by the other dye. About 3 years ago, I realised that my parting between colouring sessions was now almost white(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). I'm not ready to go grey yet (still have the heart and soul of a 14 year old girl!!) but I am really panicking about when I do decide to grow it out - how do you do it? I also think that going from very dark brown to white would be too much of a shock to my system. Help!!

Why do you have to grow it out? I'm 43 and naturally dark too, i'm resigned to dying my hair for years to come, maybe forever, to keep it my natural colour.

I dont know angel - I always thought that one day, you woke up with the old lady hairstyle (permed short and white)!!! Perhaps when i'm sixty, I really dont know. How will I know, and how will I cope. I'm 47 and nowhere near ready. Can you think of anyone in the public eye who has stayed dark forever? Jean Muir used to look ok, and Chrissie Hind is still a babe.

i understand how you feel. i see (not so much now) older ladies with jet black hair and i think, i will not look like that! i started going grey in my early twenties, as had my mum, so i've been dyeing for *cough* a few years.

they say that as you get older your skin tone changes to suit lighter hair, so alot of women go blonder. i'm very dark haired :o naturally and going lighter just didnt do it. i did it slowly with semi permanent dye but it just left me washed out. so ... i went back to dark brown and people said how well i looked:rolleyes:

the badger stripe is a problem, but such is the effort of beauty:rolleyes: ;)

if you really want to go natural, i would think the best way is to go to a reccomended hairdresser and ask their advice. if you dont know any (i dont) get an appointment for advice and dont get pushed into an immediate cut/dye.

having said all that i wish i could give up all this dyeing carp and not be worried about it. good luck.

I suppose that as I get older I'll just gradually go to a softer lighter shade maybe with some highlights. I really can't imagine me ever being all grey! It's a scary thought isn't it even moreso for us darkies. I bet if you're naturally blonde then going grey is an easier progression.

look on the box of dye you are using for a number I bet it will be 5 or 4 or even 3 if very dark this is your (darkness) depth of natural shade if it is looks like this eg 4/65 that is dark brown /copper tone the numbers after the / give the tone eg red ,copper, natural etc

To try going lighter if you are using a 4 next time you are due to dye your hair use a nuber 5 one shade lighter use this a couple of times till ends lighten and if you want to go lighter again use next shade up till you find you are happy have seen Clients go from a 2 nearly black to a 9 lightest blonde.

remember with hair colouring 2 is darkest 12 is lightest
Are U getting enough Vitamin D in your life!?

I hadn't realised that about the numbers. That very useful to know, I might go a shade lighter next time!

There is a product called ColorFix that removes dye pigment without bleaching the hair. It makes the pigment molecules shrink and then drop out of the hair. It works well on browns/blacks, and not so well on reds (because the red pigment molecules are bigger. Which, incidently, is why red dye fades so quickly. It fades, but is also harder to remove.) It smells kinda gross while on your hair, but it does not damage it. I used it, once, and got most of the black dye out of my long hair. Then, we were able to color it something more natural-looking (brown/dark blonde).
A colorist at a good salon should know what I'm talking about. This is NOT the stripping bleach, but is another product.
You can get most of the black out, then go for something more subtle, perhaps with highlights, so that the line at your scalp won't be so noticable.

Angel I really empathise with your predicament as I feel exactly the same way. It feels like a losing battle with colour fade and the grey roots appearing. I like to swim regularly which does not help either. I have about a week of lovely shiny dark brown hair and the the tell-tale line appears at the root (my hair grows really fast!) and the hair gets lighter.

I do have a very short style so it is easy to do at home but I worry that if I chose a lighter shade I will end up with dark ends and pale roots.
