I used to have highlights, but as I get older and more grey started coming in I decided to go for a full head tint. When I was having highlights, it only cost about twenty quid a time (shows you how long ago it was) and as I need to get my regrowth done every month (I am probably a 7, dye it to a 10 and I hate darkish roots) I decided after a couple of times to try it myself. I have now become quite good at it - it's all done with mirrors, lol - I angle two mirrors so I can see the back and sides of my head then just part it as the hairdressers do and bang it on the roots only. It is even, but here's my problem...it is always slighly brassy and yellow. I know this is because it is tint I am using, ( only bleach gives that lovely creamy blonde.)

Lst month I went in to get a toner, she put three different colour in for depth and I was seventy pounds (had a cut too) to reduce the brassiness and make it a little less yellow. It was great...but now it is time to do the roots again and I just know I will be back to square one.

My home dye costs 5.70, which is preferrable to seventy quid..but if I am going to have to keep getting the toner anyway, maybe I should ditch the cost of the home dye and just save to get it done professionally.

I use Recital Preference. Does anyone here have dark blonde natural hair,
    (7) and dyes it blonde at home without going yellow? Any reccomendations for a product? I would be very grateful.

Hi - I have dark blonde hair & used to use Nice 'n' Easy's Light Ash Blonde which lifted it to a nice warm colour but then I started to react to one of the ingredients which made my head really sore so now I have highlights.

I know what you're saying about the grey coming through though but I don't think I have a choice as I want my hair lighter than it's natural colour so have to use something with bleach in it. ( I think it was the bleach that I reacted to).

Maybe if you try a colour which is in the ash range you'll get the desired effect? Good Luck!
  • I have used Nice 'n' Easy as well , but i found an 'ash' blonde to be going towards grey , if you want a warmer blonde a beige blonde is better , but i am sure they do a nice dark blonde colour as well , might be worth looking at the colour range ?

if you go brassy, get an ash blonde toner to go over the top.

Its just a wash in wash out thing and costs about 90p depending where you go. The ash will remove the brass and you will keep the colour you have died it.

  • Hell £70 every month is a lot of money but I can understand what you mean about the grey. I have to have my brown hair coloured every four weeks as the grey roots show and I hate them.

I have a hairdresser come to the house who colours it for me. Costs £18 with just a fringe cut, blow dry and straightening and £26 if I want it all trimming.

  • Nice one Al!! My OH used to do mine and didn't do a bad job but the first time the hairdresser did it, she said there was big clumps of grey at the back that he had missed

If you suit short hair maybe you could get it cut really short and just keep it short till the dyed hair is cut out. If you don't like the gray/white hair that grows in, you could then try ash blonde. Never mind what other people think - it's your hair.

Don't do it yourself. I would treat yourself to a trip to the hairdressers and get streaks put in so that you don't get the obvious line when the home colouring stops.
After a couple of terrible home dye mishaps i think its worth going to the experts when doing something like this.

I am caught in this vicious circle too and I'm under 50. My white (not grey) halo shows up within 2 weeks of colouring my hair....but having tried lighter browns and found that my hair looked thinner and sparser, I went back to a darker dye.
I have dropped from a Dark Brown to a Medium Brown though, and the resistant white hair creates natural 'highlights' as it doesn't all 'take' the dye completely.
I have been cross after buying various famous brands of dye that promise to "cover all greys"....and then it doesn't live up to the promise  ! The colour fade problem on adverts is also annoyingly irrelevent....if I didn't have to colour every 3 to 4 weeks then I might be worried about simple colour-fade!

The best one I've found for coverage of white hair is the Poly Tint one by Schwarzkopf at just under 2 quid.

Mercenary, I have not tried Poly Tint but I like the sound of the price! Is it a permanent colour? Where do you buy it? I normally go to Supadrug or Boots and don't recall seeing it.

I have managed to lighten my hair quite a bit. I left it 7 weeks between colouring then used Recital Light Brown. I was not overly impressed with the grey coverage. I then have had a really good cut and I mean really good. Almost all of the darker ends have been cut off. I have been lucky enough to be in the sun quite a bit the last few days and whereas in the past I would put on a hat, I have let the sun lighten it a bit more.

I have now got to decide whether I actually like it looking lighter. At least when the grey comes throught I will not have such a pronounced "demarcation" line.
