Shokadelika, I like your idea but looking at the product I use (Nice'n Easy), my normal shade is medium brown 118 which does not fit into your description. In the pack it suggests a waiting time of 20 minutes but I always allow twice that to cover my evil roots. This means my final result is quite dark but as I have described in my previous post, it fades really fast.

    Any ideas?

I always thought that a hair dye would only develop so far and then no matter how long it was left on it wouldn't get any darker. I also have to leave mine on much longer than it says in the instructions to cover the roots fully.

    Am I wrong?

Mine fades pretty fast too but I like the shades that it goes through until it needs doing again!

Guess what I have to do tonight!? In my brand new clean bathroom too, I'm dreading making a mess!

I'd go to a hairdresser the first time and get it done a significantly lighter colour, it will take years off of you, as your skin tone will have changed as you matured too.

I did suggest this to my m-i-l as her burgundy hair adds ten years to her appearance, and as she does it herself and bit she misses really show up.

A lighter shade will be easier to maintain as the roots don't show so quick.

I also end up with a white/grey parting after 2 weeks. I usually smear mascara down the parting after Ive washed it as I cannot find a suitable product to use. I would love to find a product like this http://www.colormarkpro.com/
but it seems to only be available in the USA and they wont ship it to England. Does anyone know of anything similar?

In Boots they sell a few different root touching up kits. I haven't tried any but they look good.

    Here's one, it's £4.29 in Boots http://www.clairol.co.uk/products/rtu/index.jsp

I use this it's great :) They often have them on bogof too so I have a drawer full of touch ups and 'full' kits too. I use this one where you can see like my parting and around the hair line so you can't tell I'm a fake if I wear my hair up. It takes half as long as the normal dye too which is great before a night out. I do the mascara trick too - everyone laughs when I tell them I've touched up my roots with my mascara, lol

I've been colouring my hair since I started going grey at 16 ish. I think I am probably about 90% grey underneath this black/dark brown colour from a bottle (my natural colour). I'm only 32 and think I still get away with it but have been wondering about going lighter too as I don't want to look washed out - I'm pale too.

I've never heard of the Colourfix, worth a try I guess as long as it's not a bleach/stripping agent - last time I bleached my hair was when I was pregnant and I ended up looking like the sugar puff monster - very big and very ginger! lol :D

I started to go grey before I was 30 too. It was when I was expecting my daughter so I blame her!!

I have been into both Boots and Superdrug and looked at lighter shades. I only use a medium brown anyway which comes out darker owing to the length of time I leave it to cover the grey. The lighter shades all seem to be either "golden" or red shades which I know I would hate. It would be leaving my comfort zone to try the next non-reddish shade which is light brown.

My hair is very grey in the front but still quite dark at the back. Problems, problems. I do not have a parting as I have a short elfin crop so I can get away with about 5 or 6 weeks between sessions. I do not get a colour build-up as the twice coloured hair gets lopped off every 6 weeks.

I shall be started to fake tan any time as the weather is getting better so that will influence my hair colour.

    Oh, what to do?

I know. The thing that bugs me is that if we were dyed blonde's, black roots seem acceptable - even fashionable!! I agree about the red tones. About 5 years ago, I did try to go lighter, but I ended up with the top of my head a reddy brown colour and the bottom bit dark brown, and that was only going 1 shade lighter.
  • Please can you tell me where i can buy this colorfix from and about how much it is as i have dyed dark hair and im starting to get fed up with it and have been looking for something to take away the darkness.

    Thank You

I go to my local hairdressing college every 4 weeks to have my roots redone. Naturally I'm very dark - base 4 according to the college chart but I always have a 5 - either with a bit of red or with gold. Even having my hair coloured by someone else I still get colour build up on the longer bits of my hair which makes it look dark and flat. About 1 a year I have all the colour stripped out and redone. I do look better with dark hair as my eyebrows are black but after it's been stripped and recoloured I realise how dark and flat my hair looked before. Well worth the £25 it costs me.

I have tried having blonde highlights in various forms and always end up going back to a darker colour as my skin tone doesn't suit it.

It only costs £10 for a cut, colour and blow dry at the college so I think it's well worth £2.50 per week to keep my hair looking good.
