Hair Dying help + money saving?

It depends how grey you are. If you are totally Grey you will need a permanent dye to cover it. This will then need to be re-done every few weeks, as your roots grow through! Pemanent dye does ruin your hair, but if you have short hair, or only retouch the roots, you can keep it in a fair condition. My hair dresser advised me to only mix enough dye to do my roots and keep the remained (unmixed for next time).
If you have a smattering of Grey, then a Semi Permanent will cover it and will gradually wash out over a few weeks. These type of dyes give your hair a lovely soft feel and condition it nicely, and I would try one of these first!
I think the mousse you are talking about will enhance your normal colour, but not particularly cover grey!
My hair is virtually white when it grows through, but I dye my roots every 2 - 3 weeks, and find it a pain. The only other option is to go natural, but it makes me look about 20 years older.
I hope this helps!

It's worth thinking about henna if you're worried about chemicals. It's messy and I don't know how well it covers grey (though I think I will soon, just finding my first grey hairs now
) but it is very good for the condition of your hair and chemical free. You can buy it in lush for about £5.95.
I think grey hair looks good on men too though....0 -
if you want chemical free dye then look at places like Lush who do natural hair dyes. As has been said it depends how grey you are as to how well they'll cover. If you're doing it yourself use rubber gloves (full on Marigold type things) and then wrap the hair in cling film before putting a towel over your head while the dye takes. You'll still get it everywhere but it'll reduce the mess a bit... If you can get someone else to do it for you then even better.
Once you start dying your hair you'll have to keep it up or it looks a mess. Your roots will need doing regularly if you're using a permanent dye or it'll need doing all over if it's semi-permanent at least once a month. If you have short hair then roots are more obvious too.
I can understand why at 25 you want to dye it but most of the men I know who have dyed their hair give up after a few years max as they can't be bothered with the upkeep.0 -
I hope someone will give me some suggestions .. I have been having my hair hi-lighted for years and a year ago I stopped, my hair is growing in silver/grey its actually soooooooo nice and I intend on never dyeing it again... trouble is I hate the two-tone effect of the blonde hi-lights now Its grown out about 4 or 5 inches... I usually have it just above shoulder length and layered slightly and I really don't want to cut it off short but how do I live with the awful two-tone effect? I will be going to a wedding in 2 mths and I am really thinking about crying off as I just think everyone will be looking at my awful two-tone hair... I have avoided going on trips out because I think it looks so awful the way it is , can you tell I hate going to the hairdressers.
Any advice gratefully received... as I said I really do not want to dye it or cut it.....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I would definitely go to a good hairdresser and see what they suggest. The initial consultation should be free of charge, so even if you don't have anything done in the end, at least you'll have the best advice.
I'm actually quite jealous - I can't wait until I go grey! xGone ... or have I?0 -
Hi tanith,
You should get more help with this on the Health and Beauty board so I'll move your thread over there.

maybe try a shampoo/toner for silver hair. This may take out any "brassy" tones in the hair. This kind of product works over time I think.0

You could try a semi permanent dye (the kind that washes out over a number of washes) until the blond highlights have grown out.
Other than that a permamnent colour or cutting is the only way really, which you dont want !Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
Thanks ladies I guess I already knew the only answer was to cut or colour... I did think about the semi-permanent but then realised that it wouldn't colour the grey and the old hi-lights the same so I would still be left with 2tone...:rotfl:
I guess I am just going to have to live with it until it grows right out.. its not quite so noticeable on the day its washed for some reason maybe as it gets a little greasy the difference shows up more....
I will take a look at the shampoo/toner though I have never seen these.... anybody know where I can get them?
thanks again#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Hmm. I bought KMS silver shampoo and conditioner from Home Bargins some time ago. I've also bought similar from hairdressing shops like Sally's. You could also try ebay.
This shampoo/conditioner is designed for silver/grey hair, it also is used by blondes too. It's looks strange because it is usually purple in colour, but this dosen't affect the colour of your hair, somehow it counteracts the brassy yellow tones. Try it before you make a drastic measure of cutting hair.
I'll check out ebay and other websites, and post what I find.0
