Hope you all have a good bank holiday weekend. After much chat about slow cookers, I bought one this week from Tesco direct. I was really excited about it but the beef I made today was decidely average. The thing is that I am very purist when it comes to my meals and I generally will not add any fat or carbs to any of my meals (excluding breakfast cereal). So basically my beef thing ended up being ratatoille with meat in it. OK but not great. Any recipe suggestions? Couldn't find any on post 1 for slow cookers... Thanks

Hi efrieze: try this recipe in your slow cooker. Very tasty and no added fat or carbs (unless wine counts?)
I serve with steamed brochli and green beans. (These take 10 mins - prepare same time as you do the slowcooker and by time you've warmed plates/lade table they are ready)
    Beef Bourguignon

    Ingredients

100g lean bacon cut into strips
500g lean braising steak trimmed and cut into cubes
    16 shallots
    1 crushed clove garlic
    200ml red wine
    100ml beef stock
    bouquet garni
    salt black pepper
    125 small mushrooms

    Instructions
chuck in to slow cooker. Cook on low for 6+ hrs :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
  • Or this one efrieze - though again I'm not sure if fruit counts as carbs?

    Instructions
chuck in to slow cooker. Cook on low for 6+ hrs

    Pork & cider casserole

500g diced pork (original recipe was for rabbit but can’t been bought for love or money round here)
    1 lge onion chopped
1 lge cooking apple cored and cut into 12 wedges
80g ready to eat stoned prunes halved
    120g lean gammon
    salt ^ black pepper
    1 tsp dried sage
    ½ tsp ground nutmeg
    200ml chicken stock
    200ml dry cider

    Instructions
chuck in to slow cooker. Cook on low for 6+ hrs
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
  • hi all

New to this forum, but not dieting!!!! wondered if anyone had any objections to me joining in, i really need to get on a diet, put on so much over last 6 months and ideally would love to loose about two stone. Is there a specific diet you are all following? I ve previously done weight watchers and slimming world only to put it all back on or to give up after a stone loss.

From reading through here i hope this will give me some enthusiasm for dieting again and keep me from gorging myself!!!

Its been the longest three months..... success is nearly insight:T ....... Money in account
  • Hello, any chance I can join your club? I'm really overweight & I feel like a whale :(

I started a couple of months ago at just over 17 stone, I want to get down to about 14 stone eventually. I've slowly managed to drop to 230 lbs (I think thats 6 lb off 16 stone.

    I think I need a bit of a push.

Also, does anyone know if eggs are good or bad for you (I've heard both!)
I find it difficult to eat breakfast, mostly due to my rolling shifts ~ if I'm on earlys I just can't force it down at 5am, and if I'm on nights I don't get up til 4pm, and usually just don't bother.
However I love poached eggs on toast (wholemeal bread & marg) and wondered if this was a healthy enough breakfast as I could prob eat it every day.

    Hi Raphael

Wecome to the gang :T . I eat eggs most days: SW reckon it's fine if your collestro lis ok. I find them very filling where as cereal leaves me hungry within the hour.
You don't seem to mention vegetables or fruit very much? It would be good to try and incorporate some into your diet as they are low in calories and would help fill you up as well as being very good for you. It's difficult if, like me, you don't like vegetables very much (though luckily I could eat fruit for England). I've had to train my self to cook some at every meal. Sometimes it is a case of taking a few mouthfuls to be good and then allowing myself some lovely meat :D and then some more veg. Try and find a couple of recipes which include vegetable in an interesting way. Using recipies has been another good way of incorporating them, rather than choosing some meat and some potatoes and not knowing what to do next. I've only really leant to cook properly in the last couple of years and i reckon I'm quite a bit older than you. Also you refer to having potatoes and rice in the same meal - perhaps try and cut one of these out as they are both major carbs and you shouldn't need both in one meal. These are all little tricks that will help. Some people can change everything at once, and others need to change one thing at a time. So go at the pace that is right for you. But stick with us and before long that horrid beached whale feeling will go :j

Hi desparate lou: of course you are most welcome :j . We are all doing different plans: some ww or SW and some calorie counting or just cutting back on portion sizes and biscuits:D . General advice is to find the plan that is righ for your life style and join us here for motivation and fun and advice. I'm an SW fan myself. As with any plan you chose, sticking with it is the key, and this time, with the help of this forum you can and will lose the weight and keep it off. Plenty of inspirational folk on here who have reached target: petrichor, victory, suggs and then others who have lost 4-5 stone and still working at it.

Join our monthly 5lb challenge (just post a big hello to lois and she'll pick it up) which starts next Wed for Sept. Think is small chunks like this and time and weight loss will soon pass

Edit: Heeeyyyy: just seen you're in Brighton. Fabulous day isn't it!

  • Just a quicky tiredycustard: did you check via the SW website that there weren't other meetings not too far form you to go to just the once? (You enter your postcode and they all come up). You probabaly did so sorry for treating you like an idiot!! It's just we're lucky round here with so much choice and assumed you must have more tha one group to choose form in 5-10 mile radius. But maybe not if you live in the country side...
