OH hates my new accent...

She will not accept that some foods cannot be eaten without the food itself making a noise eg if you break a crisp in half with your fingers it will make a cracking noise... yet she expects me to be able to 'break' one in my mouth with no 'crack' noise!!! You would not believe how long it takes to eat a packet of crisps infront of her... and then I get grief for being slow and prolonging her agony! lol
I once had to eat spaghetti with my hands as the noise annoyed him so much :eek:This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hi, Just to throw a different suggestion into the mix as you've asked what you can do about developing a different accent. You could ring a drama teacher and ask about having private lessons. They can teach you to talk in a certain way, usually RP, but if you explain the situation they may have some ideas.
When there are more than 1 accent in a household, it can be noticeable. DH was an army child who moved around, I can't pinpoint an accent on him. He notices that the local Yorkshire accent of where we live frequently puts a (non existent) extra vowel into certain words.
And I agree that some women are not totally rational when heavily pregnant, my eldest was due early March in a leap year and I really, really hoped he wasn't going to be born on Feb 29th because my DH had told me if he was then he was only going to buy him a birthday present every 4 years and I believed it.:o

Getting help with changing the accent isn't going to solve the other issues.
It's the person with the condition that needs the support, people should be able to speak in an accent without all hell breaking loose.
She might not be violent but she's being verbally abusive. I think it's a bit odd that she can cope with kids making noise and I am assuming eating around her, but a family member makes a slight noise when eating and she gets distressed.0 -
I do think in the South East we can be a bit snobby about accents and if your wife works with mainly people from the home counties who make fun of regional accents or judge people on them (Yes I know it shouldn't happen but it does and often "professionals" are the worst for it)then maybe is does have genuine discomfort with your accent socially. Does she pull you up on it only when you are with other people? What kind of accent does she have ?
I think people feel the accent stuff is a bit of a red herring - Yes she doesn't like it - but for social rather than other reasons and her reactions to eating noises isn't the same reaction. She doesn't burst into tears in public if you speak to he r or at home alone presumably ?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Totally agree, especially with last paragraph.
If she can cope with some people making noises and not others, then she is allowing herself to be annoyed when it suits her.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

HBK has a thread in the Arms called 'What's irritating you?' Not liking odd noises are best placed there.
It's whisoering in TV or radio which does it for me, the electronics must produce a weird effect.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

I've lived in the South East (29 years), north west (7 years) and now south west (8 years). I've noticed myself that I've taken on a few farmer-ish ways of speaking. My old Pompey accent is long gone and I sounded neutral for a while but definitely picking up so ooh arrr sounds since living in the south west. But as my DH is from the south west it's not a problem but my friends back down south notice it and laugh. Why is your OH getting so annoyed by it?
Exited to say read a few more posts. Difficult situation which I can't see going away anytime soon once baby has arrived. However you can't how you 'speak' and a baby will make all kinds of noise so I also suggest your OH needs help and quick before this blows in to a bigger problem than it already is.0 -
