Did those of you who travelled over the Summer school holidays have a good holiday?

i had a great 6 days in Boston!
It was my first trip as a solo traveller but I really enjoyed it and none of the things that I was a little apprehensive about were a problem so it's definitely given me the confidence to take longer/further solo trips in the future :)

I can thoroughly recommend Boston as a city break destination, loads to do and easy to get around. The only thing that I didn't like was the heat, or more specifically the humidity, but this could be avoided by not going in August! Definitely on my list of places to go back to sometime :) ( when I've visited some of the 29 remaining states that I haven't been to yet :D)

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

    21 sleeps until Thailand!

Yes, Boston is a fantastic city, easily my favourite in the US. August wouldn't be my first choice to go (avoid Jan & Feb too where it can be -20C) but it's a very compact, friendly city with loads to do.

Still nothing planned for Xmas/New Year. I usually have a few days on the Med but I'm tempted just to have a quiet time at home then seek some winter sun later when it's cheaper.
  • Going on a cruise in December to the Caribbean! Sun, sea and sand all week long :-)

City centre hotels in a major tourist city generally = not cheap but
I stayed here (http://charlesmarkhotel.com/) and would recommend it :)
Was much more reasonably priced that a lot of others I looked at.

Either late spring or autumn (or "fall") will avoid the extremes of weather, the latter if you want to get out of the city to explore more of New England. The only problem is that September and October are peaks seasons so flights and hotels will probably be more expensive.

When in Boston I tend to stop over the river in Cambridge where hotels are a little cheaper and you are only a short ride away on the subway. Stopping further out will be cheaper but the public transport links aren't as good - and driving in Boston is never a good idea.
