Done it loads of times.
Never a problem.0 -

We have packing lists and last time we went away, for a 3 week road trip, we were well under the luggage limit and nothing came back unworn. For 3 weeks, we took about 6 t-shirts/tops each, 3 pairs of shorts, one pair of trousers, underwear, swimming stuff, 1 pair trainers, 1 pair sandals, 1 pair flip flops, 1 hoodie, 1 waterproof, 4 pairs socks. We knew we would want to buy souvenir t-shirts while we were there and so we planned for that. We took enough underwear for one week and kept washing undies through in the shower as we went along.
If stuff comes back unworn, you didn't need it!
Having said that, I did supervise the kids packing as you never know!
Can I come to your school of packing? I'm impressed! I really need to learn to pack as we go.
Did you wash the shirts/shorts too?
My 20 year old would never do that!0 -

But
I have a friend who packs 1 of everything for every day that she's away, plus a few extras 'for choice'!
I'm that friend!0 -
You ain't heard the best yet, I take photos of myself in all of my clothing (the mirror lies but the camera don't), to see how I look
Yes, I stick to my lists.
I've been known to do 12kg for 2 weeks, but I average 15kg-20 kg max. Despite being able to take 30kg with Emirates, sadly I've never managed it. But the last few holz I've come back with clothes unworn, so I'm cutting down on my evening wear. I'm too MSE to wash clothes on holiday.
Mr Duke does the opposite & packs 29 pairs of thick wooly socks, 45 tops .... I just pack both cases now myself, he can't fold properly eitherI cannot do creased clothes! Plus I mix our clothes then if one case goes missing I'll still have stuff to wear.
I'm laughing but at the same time I'm in awe! I know I;m a rubbish packer, my theory is "be prepared for all eventualities" and there is never an eventuality!0 -

It's one of the things that bothers me slightly about the prospect of travelling solo, that if my one case goes astray I'm stuck
It never even crossed my mind to cross pack.....but you raise an interesting question?
Make sure you have set of clean clothes in your carryon perhaps?0 -

Whenever I travel solo (which is almost always) I always pack a change of clothes in my hand luggage. If you fly long haul with a stopover it can be nice to get changed en route otherwise you can be in the same clothes for 36-48 hours.
However, losing my case has never bothered me too much. As long as you have a credit card (or cash) on you then you can just simply buy more clothes. In most cases they will be cheaper than they cosr back home0 -

DO IT!!! (Nice big shouty capitals!!)
I see you have some savings already, I loved it the first time I was away, even if you go for a year spend a month getting to Oz a bit of travelling then finding a job to fund even more travelling. There are always jobs for backpackers weather its in a shop, bar work (you need to do a course but its cheap) hotel/resort work. If you dont mind what job you do and go with an open mind you will be fine!!
I would say though have bit of a slush fund either kept with family or a friend that you trust so if things go a bit t*ts up you know you can get back home or just to get to another job.
xxThanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada  :dance:0 -
Our luggage was as follows:
2 x Large suitcases
1 x Medium - the 20 year old said he didn't need a big one, now I know it is because he only took so little!
My two boys had a rucksack each
I just had my cross body bag.
(Snorkelling Gear, clothes, all types of over the counter meds, many charges for different things, clothes for any/all eventualities for myself?!?!?)
RE: Chargers, my 20 year old didn't pack his laptop charger, so used mine at times I found that annoying and inconvenient especially the night he took my charger and I couldn't sleep, battery ran out only to realise he'd taken it to their part of the villa, which had separate entry, so spent 15 minutes trying to wake him up without making too much noise, grrrrrrrrr, so told him to bring his own next time (will be checking and packing for him next time!!!).
We all took our mobiles + mobile chargers + Laptops + Go Pro Charger + other Camera charger + Go Pro Selfie Stick + Go Pro floaty device thingy.
So our personal kits by themselves add to weight?
Underwear, I ALWAYS pack extra = we went for 18 days so I took 25 days worth of underwear
Am I doing something wrong because I can't understand how you guys manage to pack so little?0 -

In Asia you can get by with packing light as laundry services are so cheap (do you really need to wear something different every day for a 2-3 week holiday?). A five star hotel might charge Western prices but on every corner you will find someone who will do laundry for you for a less than a pound per bag. Rather than 25 sets of underwear you really only need a 4 or 5.
A good tip is to get your laundry done on your last day as it makes packing easier and it's one less job to do when you get home.
Clothes are also very cheap to buy and can often be treated as disposable. I buy a cheap pair of sandals on arrival and if they are still in one piece at the end of the holiday I'll just bin them.
I don't take a laptop on holiday as I like to get away from technology. If you do need to find some information online then I just use my phone as there is free wifi everywhere.0 -
jackieblack wrote: » I don't understand this, what's not MSE about rinsing a few bits and bobs out in the sink?
Oh I don't mind a bit of rinsing. I was thinking more of wasting valuable holiday time using a laundry. Or paying the hotel to do a load which would mount up.
I always used to do this too

What about 2 bags? A small wheelie that you can carry on, & as big a rucksack as you can get away with.0
