  • Something strange going on here.

I did a speedtest using the Speedtest app on my phone and got 3.75mbps, so went on my laptop and got 3.7mbps with testmy.net

I then went on the btwholesale speedtest site which SSE told me to do when the speed drops and speedtest came back as full speed.

So I tested a download from usenet using sabnzbd and got 6.7MB/s download, which is what I get from there - I only pay for 50mb connection.

So why are them two speedtest sites showing such slow speeds at night but fine during day?

It's probably because the speedtests that are slower could be single threaded.

I think you can try a multi threaded speedtest with testmy.net

I noticed that things got very slow indeed when a big football or Rugby match was on. This suggests a big contention ratio (more users per line).
Yest I did get the CEO email from the CEO email site.
His name is Alistair dot Phillips-Davies at the SSE address, if I can possibly put it like that without it getting banned!
Of course he does not reply in person. He no doubt has thousands of complaints!
  • Quick update here .. been posting mainly on HKUD thread

Engineer visited last week, line given the all clear. Hassled SSE again and they made some changes on Thursday. Performance has been great since and I no longer get the drops in speed in the daytime .. getting 75MBps pretty much 24/7 instead of that overnight and <2Mbps from 9am until midnight. Results here:

Yep its seems that SSE are using some aggressive traffic shaping despite their claims they dont use it.

My switch back to BT is booked for next monday and from looking to move my Electric and Gas over to SSE as well as my Fibre, I would'nt touch these cowboys in a lifetime and my biggest regret is that i told my cousin to switch over to them aswell on a normal ADSL2 line , even her line speeds goes from 16mb down to 1.5mb for 12 hours a day.

If you have switched to SSE check your speed, If its not correct over a 48 hour period then phone SSE and log a complaint as you have a right to leave your contract within the first 3 months if SSE dont fix the problem.
  • I'm getting throttled on my torrents. I have 57mbs and can't get 1mb download speed on torrents. YouTube vids are jerk to. Been with them 2 weeks. Suggestions ?

Set it to every hour, 100 times and let it run. It'll draw you a graph of speeds over time. Torrents are throttled by lots of ISPs in peak times.

I found that after midnight everything was fine but seriously slow from 9am onwards.

GET OUT thats my only suggestion. You get what you pay for. BT V SSE is like Coke Cola v Panda Pop Cola.

Or persist with SSE faults dept .. I had exactly the same issue and it has been resolved.

    After:

..changes were made at SSE end to resolve
