The generalissimos can swim reasonably well?

    Yup, pretty well and confidently.

There is also a child proof pool fence around the pool as mandated by NSW law. You get in a lot of trouble if you don't have one and a kid drowns in your pool. Normally if you have no other convictions you'll be looking at a 5 figure fine and 18 months in gaol. Sadly most summers we get a handful of these events, usually a toddler that gets in to an unsecured pool.

It's a funny law really. You have to have a pool fence that is up to code from when your pool was built, a bit like the rules about seat belts in the UK. The kicker though is when a house changes ownership it has to be brought up to the code that is current at that time.

Contrary to the stereotype, Aussies love a lot of rules. If I get drunk, leave the pub on foot and then get run over, the landlord has not just a civil liability but potentially a criminal one too.

As a result, a deaf mate of mine has great difficulty getting served in a pub late on a Friday.

    Gutted. My £1 ran out.

Can't remember when I signed up for it, but it was a "one month" special offer for £1 on findmypast. My account showed today's date and I looked at that and thought "surely it'll end at midnight on that date". No, it's just asked me to pay/subscribe to continue, so the date in the account was "up to, but not including".

I'll get withdrawal symptoms now :(

I must say it was probably the best £1 I've ever spent. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of maxing it out ..... on the flip side, I've not left the sofa for a month as I was enjoying it so much.

Now you know your way round and what you're looking for, perhaps it is time to use the free version at the local library. If you know that you can book a computer and get a solid hour that is.

If you book online, you just enter your details, including the card details. However, the machine that spews out the tickets at teh station requires the card to be inserted first. At least, that's how it's worked for me.

    Ah, cool :)

I've never booked online, so have no idea.

If you can get it for £10 a month and you get that much enjoyment out if it, it is definitely worth it. The 1939 household survey isn't available yet on the library version, so that may be a decider too.

It's worth £10 as a key leisure activity imo. But be warned... you could get hooked. We have people who have come in every single day to get their free hour and they've been doing it for years. ETA: is there any way you could push the boat out and pay £10 a month for say the next 3 months?

Incidentally Pastures, did your nice neighbour move in the end and if so is the new one equally great?

    Assumed name?

Immigrant (probably Irish, American or Australian)?

    Other than that, no idea.

Interesting what you said re Boyds, Pastures. I have a similar issue with a London register. They have entered a burial record as Sara. I am looking for a Jane. If it was smudged or damaged then those two could look v similar in secretary hand. It will take a trip to the archives to view for myself.

There shouldn't be a Sara there at all, and if I've found Jane I'll be the first person to get there (nobody is looking in London, she should be an early settler in Virginia). However I could go all the way to the archive and find out it is a dead end.

But you'd have had all the benefits of modern living! You could've given them a Vesta curry, followed by an Arctic Roll!!

Bottle of Blue Nun and bob's your uncle!

So I could, the CO and his wife would have loved it :D and prawn c0cktail for starters! Blue Nun was quite a popular buy at the NAAFI. And Black Tower.

kabayiri The church hall was packed to the gunwhales, especially as someone was making bacon rolls

Brilliant news Pastures. How did you find her in the end?
